If you already have an FX and you're going to pair it with a high end Nvidia, you will be bottlenecked.

If you are still planning, get an i5.

the Nvida GTX 970 is the one i am looking to buy

I wouldn't pair the 970 below an FX 8370...  but if you can afford an i5 platform, please go for the i5...

For the love of all that is holy, if you were going to go for an AMD CPU, ensure for one that it is at least an FX-8320 or significantly better, with a Vishera chip, and that it supports a motherboard you're looking to buy.

But realistically, an i5 is just less of a problem child and runs on an architecture that isn't arse and poo.

You should be fine, i do recommend getting an Intel CPU, even an i3, but AMD CPUs are more for budget builds, if thats your thing, anything under the 8320 is  more for very budget.

Future Build: Intel Core i7 4790 | MSI GTX960 2GB | B85M-P33 | XFX TSPRO 550W | CM K350 | Kingston HyperX Black 8GB DDR3 1600MHz | WD Caviar Blue 1TB <p>

Sorry i meant to say i5 4670k not "i5 4790k" to quote myself. I was planning to go with the AMD FX 8350 and the motherboard i have chosen does support this CPU.

I will probably not be over clocking this CPU as i do not feel it is necessary but if i feel like doing it in the future i might consider it.

If you don't plan on overclocking, get the cheapest i5 with a cheap~ish motherboard and you'll get more bang for your buck. Funny enough pairing AMD cpu with AMD gpu is the least optimal thing you can do, gpu drivers need more single thread performance and AMD cpus have poor single thread performance.

It's fine, although if you're intention is gaming, Intel is better (and usually the same price) except for the extreme budgets as the FX cpus really aren't ideal for high end gaming (and they're not any cheaper).

For Budget (below 450 USD)

you are better off with Athlon X4 860k. dont get FX. Its a waste.

for AMD, your choices atm is

around 300 usd - 7870k APU (upgrade path: buy a R9 380. That setup will last you for quite some time)

300-450 USD - Athlon X4 860k + R9 280X or R9 380

Only time FX is viable is dirt cheap rendering or server machine

For that, you aim at 550 USD and below.

8370e (specifically the E version)

cheapest 970 board with 4+1 or 8+1 power delivery for rendering or 990FX board for servers.

32GB ECC memory for servers or 16-32GB non ECC for rendering - MAX SPEED 1600. FX memory controller was never meant to run any RAM speeds over 1333, anything over that is purely the motherboard compensating. My FX 8320 couldnt handle 1866, even though the board (990fx sabertooth R2) was rated for it.

I wouldnt suggest FX outside of cheap rendering and servers. The 8370e, specifically the "e" version, is a 95w version that is optimized for lower voltages and power drain. They seem to be just better binned chips and they CAN run off a 4+1 phase power delivery (that was AMDs intention with these). You cannot overclock with 4+1 phase setup, but you can actually get a dirt cheap 970 board and run these "e" chips without the chips throttling due to lack of power.

For gaming, 860k should be the bottom mark. Yes G3258 costs the same and gets better FPS in some titles, but its a dual core, with 2 threads unlike the 860k or an i3 which is dual core with 4 threads. Net result is that the G3258 will give you lag or stuttering in some newer games due to lack of threads.

Bottom line:

Cheap solution for gaming - 860k

better solution for gaming - i3 4xxx

best solution for gaming - i5 4xxx

terrible solution for gaming - FX whatever

hillarious but still usable for gaming - Phenom X4 / Phenom X6 (ironically, these nearly 8 year old CPUs are as good as todays 8350, and they are better at single core workloads.... that says A LOT)
