Thinking about upgrading my GPU

Kripled

So I've recently come into some major dough, 700+ USD and I am looking to upgrade from my measly 970. The obvious option at this point would either be the 980 Ti or the Fury X, however the 6GB of the 980 Ti sounds a whole lot more appealing than 4GB of HBM. My current resolution is 2560x1080 but I am hoping to switch that monitor for its bigger and badder brother, the 34 inch 3440x1440 LG. Which card performs better at that resolution and is it viable? I've noticed that the 970 has some trouble playing games at 2560x1080 but figured I'd just deal with it, I dont want to have to run into this problem with 3440x1440. I won't be upgrading the monitor anytime soon however as it'll be unlikely I'll come into that much money again.

TL;DR: I have 700 dollars to spend on a GPU or anything else that would benefit me greatly, help me make the right decision..

I'd vote for the 980ti, it usually performs better.

I'll answer you, if you send me your old 970

That would make 2 free 970s shipped to me from across the world... :D

But really though the 980 ti would be great. If you're counting on DX12 VRAM stacking you could get another 970 though. But still, a 980ti would be amazing

You could go for SLI, but it will be a pain to set-up especially in games

The best option would be getting the 980ti

I would have expected a 970 to perform quite well at 2560x1080.

It should really honestly, unless he is turning on AA which will most likely need more VRAM.

It's not bad by any means, but some games have a couple issues with FPS, namely Shadow of Mordor, GTA V, and Star Citizen. Also I have a superiority complex when it comes to computers, just always want the best of the best, but that aside the main reason I want a 980 Ti is because since I am a 17 year old student, my parents paid for the PC and it's unlikely I will be able to upgrade it anytime soon (5+ years). Also the VRAM issue with the 970 has always kind of bothered me, even though I bought the card knowing it's crippled.

980Ti for anything under 4k. FuryX card performs better at 4k resolution right now. But that's not the best part, on some benchmarks- it goes toe-to-toe with the titan x, the 980ti on the other hand had never been able to do that against it's bigger brother.

I'm running a 970 on 2560x1080 as well and while I definitely agree there are a couple games that drop it below 60fps. That being said I suggest waiting for Pascal since the 980Ti and Fury X aren't quite there for 3440x1440 or 4k yet, but if you did want to upgrade now the Gigabyte GTX 980 Ti G1 is your best bet.

Pascal is gonna be late 2016 so I don't know if it's worth the wait. Also consider the thread post about AMD getting priority for HBM2 than nvidia, as that may further delay pascal'so release date.

Dual-Fiji (dual fury x) comes out this August I believe.

Q2/Q3 is what has been reported so far for Pascal so far, haven't seen anything for late 2016 yet. It would be waiting about a year but that's what I've set out for myself as well as my 970 or R9 390 will be more than enough for me until then.

if you have a 1440p monitor or 4k monitor, go for 980ti

if you have 1080p monitor, just put it in a savings account and buy the pascal card that's supposed be a couple times better than maxwell.

With Pascal coming in late 2016 I am not gonna wait that long, however this dual fury x sounds interesting, any info on it?

Maybe just get 390X ? Or maybe even 2 of them since CrossFire is far better than SLI.

Can't crossfire, I am using a mini itx mobo in a 250D with a 650W PSU. I am thinking about getting the evga SC+ variant with a backplate.

I'm hoping this causes the release of Titan x2, GTX 990 or some dual Maxwell 200 card... but GG nvidia air cooling a dual Titan X card...

Logically it'll be a 4 slot card... 690 (2 Slots) --> Titan Z (3 Slots) --> Titan X2/990 (4 slots)

JK, but I assume some dual GPU nvidia card is in the pipeline

I've decided I am going to try my luck getting a Hybrid GTX 980 Ti, if that doesn't happen then its the SC ACX variant with the backplate. Thank you all for the insight.
