It will runs games fine. In terms of UI it's pretty similar but has live tiles in the start menu. In term of performance, it would be the same if not, better due to WDDM 2.0 and DirectX 12 which would be required in future games.

An Operating System operates your system, it doesn't do miracles. If your system is crap, there is just so much optimization it can provide, assuming you don't want to a return to MSDOS days, and balance features.

From Windows 7, Windows 10 has a lot of features, As you have Windows 10 features plus the ones of Windows 8.

Here are some:

  • Power Menu (right-click start button, or Win+X to quick access to Windows settings and panels)
  • Command prompt window that is now scalable to any size, and you can select, copy, paste like a normal text editor.
  • Much improved file transfer/copy/delete
  • New file operation (copy/move/delete dialog box) with more detail information and performance graph
  • New file collision (when you have 2 files with the same name), is now processed at the beginning or the end of the copy/move operation, not during, allowing you to not have to pay attention to it for large operations. Also, the new dialog allows better file comparison to know which one to pick to override.
  • Multiple file transfers/operation dialogs now merges into one.
  • Ability to pause/resume transfers/copy operation.
  • Windows auto-switch between wireless to wire and back network connection, always picking the best and what is available.
  • Faster startup time.
  • Full SSD ready.
  • 100% UEFI ready with complete support, allowing more secure computer against boot level attacks, and even much faster startup.
  • DirectX 12
  • Edge web browser faster than Chrome, MUCH less CPU and RAM hungry, full and proper high-DPI support and multi-touch, with smooth scrolling and zooming. (Extensions support (suing the same technologies as Firefox and Chrome for quick and easy porting) coming later in the year)
  • Access to Grove Music Service
  • Access to Windows App (aka: Universal Apps)
  • Hyper-V Virtual Machine (Pro edition)
  • Improved Remote Desktop with GPU acceleration (yes, you can play a game via remote desktop)
  • XBox One to PC stream (Microsoft says that they are looking into the reverse.)
  • XBox integration in PC all games. This give you teh ability to record game play clips, and take screen shot and have XBox Live integration. This service is free.
  • Improved Microsoft Precision Touch pad technology
  • Improved touch keyboard and inking
  • Improved Multi-monitor support
  • Virtual desktops
  • Improved Alt+Tab
  • Improved File Explorer
  • Notification Center (called Action Center)
  • Miracast support
  • New 4x4 Snap feature
  • Snap Assists
  • New Task Manager
  • File History
  • 3D printer API support
  • Windows Hello (proper, super fast, facial or biometric recognition login to the system and services. Very secure)
  • NVM Express (NVMe) support (needed for the next gen SSDs)
  • Storage Spaces (merge internal and/or external HDD's together like a RAID setup without the need of a RAID setup - slower as it is all software driven, but a free solution without new hardware to buy)
  • New Start Menu scalable and customizable.
  • OneDrive integration, complete with system settings sync between your devices
  • Cortana
  • P2P internal network Windows update transfer (the idea is that 1 computer downloads Windows 10 updates, who ever is the first, and then transfer it to other systems)
  • Free Office Mobile (Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. They are the light version of each program if you will, it doesn't have all the features, but has the core feature that should many needs. No grammar check, however, only spell check. But hey it is free)

[*} Improve memory management which adapts to low memory system and high memory system, ensuring a fast and responsive Windows experience regardless.

and more.

And it is free. Beggars can't be choosers, as the expression goes.

thanks for informing me about this. i just assumed that it was like great for more office type use and really this pc im on is only focused on gaming so i dont need any of the new options menus and other fancy stuff that most people like to help them get work done better. but that does seem better if it helps cut my ram and cpu usage down and allows more to be used for gaming. i know there was a whole games for windows live issue that caused a lot of games to not like the windows 8 system. should i wait on getting 10 till the bugs are worked out or will it be good enough on day one to work with most games as intended?

I don't know what age you are, but I can ensure you that your PC will not be used for gaming exclusively for long :)

So even if you don't care about Windows 10 features and abilities NOW, I am most certain you will in the future, but the difference is that now its free. later you'll need to cash out over 100$

I think day 1 will be stable.

Its  stable enough now in the technical preview.

Yeah there is no point in not getting a free upgrade.

Personaly I love win 10.

Dark theme for many apps.

And has the best parts on win 7 and win 8 and more.

I just love it. And its just the technical preview.

You don't need a rig for every tasks. 1 system can and will handle everything. I don' know who put you this in your head that you need a dedicated system for each task, but that is simply false. And no, performance won't degrade because you install games. This is silliness. I can assure you of this :)

Windows 10 will also allow you to sync your settings between systems, to make your laptop an extension of your desktop, and you can pick what you want to sync between devices. Pretty neat. Windows 8 did this, and while minor thing, it does make the experience of using the device better.

yeah i know, i just prefer having two different ones as i built this rig for gaming and i dont need none gaming programs taking up HDD space that could be used for more games

That is hwy you can get more HDDs, or larger capacity ones. And I HIGHLY doubt you need more than 256GB for your programs. I have many huge ass programs, and I can fit it all on a 128GB SSD with Windows, and plenty of room left. At work, I have even more large scale software let alone what we work on is multiple AAA games bigs. and we are fine on an 256GB SSD.

The best configuration is SSD + HDD configuration.

With the money you save by not having a second computer, you can have a 512GB SSD (because why not) for your programs and Windows, and 1 to 4TB fast HDD (they are like 100$) for your files and your games, if you want to, and still save a crap ton of money left for more games, and cooler system upgrade or kick-ass multi-monitor setup, or save money for Nvidia's coming up GPU: Pascal architecture :)

You can try it, I mean, in any case you'll need a new SSD/HDD for your new computer. You'll see, your games will still run great, and so is your programs, and have plenty of space left. I would suggest to consider this. And like I said, you'll get more money for more games, or a kick ass backup system, or save up for a nice cool upgraded computer, or new stuff to make your system even nicer or better.

Office programs are very space efficient and if you have a multiterabyte you should be fine
