I have a 3 pin fan on a 4 pin board and the thing always runs at max. Is there an adapter for 3 pin to 4 or a way to change voltage so the thing doesn't always run max?

There are low noise adapters you can add inline but you should be able to control the fans via the motherboard.

There should be a "Silent" option somewhere under CPU fan or something like that, can't remember exactly where.

I have a gigabyte board and I've looked though the bios nothing pops up

Gigabyte should have a software option to control fans, another alternative is Speed fan:

Those profiles don't work very well with 3pin fans.

Really? Mine seems to be working fine with the freezer sitting at about 1300 RPM and I can barely hear it at idle, let alone under load.

Could be that they have made better BIOS with x97 chipset. I got support response from Gigabyte after my 3pins didn't start while using predefined profiles. They said that those are only for 4pins.

Hmmm, not sure then. Like I said, it's set to "Silent" over here and it in fact is very very silent.

Yeah, I had my 4pin CPU fans set to that with previous mobo. When it works, it works really like supposed to. But there can be problem when using 3pins.... and on system fan headers.
