I'm sure the closed back model has better bass response than the regular 700's.

owning and using the bassiest beyerdynamic dt770 and audio technica's solid bass ath ws55 I still don't feel like the audio technica ath ad700 has no bass. less bass yes but nothing to the point where I feel like chunks of the music spectrum are missing. also when I EQ things in the ad700 still has the ability to rumble and wiggle my earlobes. 

 

that said I also believe that the ad700X refresh has improved bass in comparison

The DT 990 may be a better option if youre looking for bass, comfort, and open headphones with great treble all in one package.
