"Anyone who is planning to get windows 10, make sure you either get the pro version or don't update at all. It is programmed to update automatically without permission and will interrupt you while you are working, playing, streaming videos, etc. (On the non-pro version)

I'm running the test build right now on my computer and it decided to update, so I lost all of my changes to an essay."

My friend posted this on facebook. Is this true or is it only for the test versions while they are out? Can it be turned off? I wouldn't want this interrupting me in the middle of something.

Updates are forced to be downloaded and installed in the non pro version. They won't immediate turn off your computer though. It should say "Restarting in 10 minutes" Or something like that.

By default, Windows 10 will download, install, and reboot machines automatically when they’re not in use to install the updates. There’s only one other option: download, install, and choose when to reboot.

You can read more about it here.

Having Pro only allows you to delay the updates one week once per update. Either way it will install them by itself eventually.

The consumer versions of windows 10 will not allow you to disable automatic updates, which means you can't prevent them from being downloaded or anything.

And yes, the pro version allows you to disable updates.

Good thing I decided to buy windows 8.1 pro off http://reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap instead of regular 8.1 or something like that.

The enterprise edition is only way you can turn updates off all together.  Which is sad.

Honestly, Windows Updates is the WORST part about Windows, and if Windows 10 is the same as the Windows 10 Tech Preview, I will revert back to Windows 8.1.  I can NOT accept the idea of the way Windows 10 Tech Preview did updates, its destructive and extremely inconvenient.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

If I have to install my drivers every month, I'll shit.

With the Windows 10 Tech Preview they released a new update once a month or so, in the form of a ISO download and it just automatically reinstalled Windows on restart to its new build.

Windows 8 beta's didn't do this, Windows 7 beta's didn't do this.  And with them changing so much about Windows 10 Tech Preview and its updates, I don't know if this change is going to be a permanent solution.

From what I understand, Windows will be installing updates when you're least likely to use the system. It will probably have an obstructive dialog that tells you to reboot your system, allowing to procrastinate for minutes or hours. Just like Windows 7 has if you manually install updates before you turn off your pc.

I don't know why people think this is a bad idea.

Sure, faulty updates could happen, but damn are they rare. But, most of them patch VULNERABILITIES within the core OS.

So, instead of running around with that massive vulnerability, that could potentially install malware/rootkits/randomware, you're patched the minute it comes out (or however long you're allowed to delay). Instead of delaying forever.

No. BOTH Windows 10 and 10 Pro forces updates including drivers.

The only thing you can do with the Pro edition, is to delay the installation of the set of available update (you can't pick and choose).

If you think drivers should not be forced, I made a user voice, but needs a lot more votes to get Microsoft attention. So please vote:

I can't possibly believe MS will force an update if you're gaming or doing other important stuff, without you having the ability to postpone it a few hours. MS probably knows a lot of people game on windows, it would be plain stupid if they did that.

Your computer is not going to restart on you. It will ask you what time you want it to notify you again about the update, like current Windows.

It will just start the update process automatically.

That's what I thought, but the OP made it seem like windows would force you to restart your pc, even if you're doing important stuff.

Yea.. but no.

You'll see that there isn't much difference in reality. You just no longer to manually check for updates anymore to be sure you have the latest and greatest. The only problem is if you have a driver that comes in that screws things up, or that a Windows update screws without system, although that last one is rare. Especially now that they are adding a new layer of testing which will be Windows Insiders who choose to stay an Insider after Windows 10 is released.

Dosent it dl the updates automatically then?

What about users with slower internet? We'll get booted the fuk out of every game we play

As mentioned, yes it updates automatically, but it wont' be stupid and reboot on you. It will ask you like current versions of Windows, when you want to restart your system.

For slow or limited bandwidth users who has multiple computers at home, you have this new feature enabled by default (although I forgot the radio box selection what was the default as I played with it a while back and my settings are transfered through the multiple build upgrades):
