Hey Linus Forum

I would like to install a 2TB Raid Array to my computer, I am currently using 2 x 1TB Seagate HDD's

Along with a 500GB WD which is going to be used for my OS Partition

I will be installing a clean copy of Windows 7Pro x64

I am also using the Intel Onboard RAID on the P6TSE.

How do I go about doing this because I'm not actually using the main drive in the raid array, the array is just for storage

some people on the internet have told me I need to use AHCI instead of RAID

Im installing from a windows .iso boot CD and I also have the drivers loaded to a usb thumbstick

1.How do I do this in order?

- Configure as RAID/AHCI/IDE

-Run Windows CD?

-System-

Intel i7 920 3.80Ghz

Intel P6TSE 1366

12GB Corsair Memory

7970 Lightning

H100i Cooler

Xonar DG Soundcard

2x 1TB Seagate HDD

1x WD 500Gb HDD.

Hmm. Only have the 500GB connected while you're installing winders (in AHCI mode). After you have your winders updated/drivers intsalled (including AHCI driver) then connect your 1tb's and into the bios you go. Once you're there look around until you find your drive settings (IDE, AHCI, RAID) change from AHCI to raid then reboot. While rebooting push ctrl-t or something to get into the raid menu. Then just select your drives, raid mode then reboot. Back into bios you go, change back to AHCI mode and to winders.

Just watch a Youtube vid :P You used Youtube to L2BuildaPC in the first place right? Srsly, watch a Youtube vid.

Thank you for the reply

My understanding was that the RAID array had to be created with the installation of windows

1. Install windows partition with the AHCI Driver and then after windows has rebooted create a RAID Array

with the new drives

Will I have to Enable the drives in the Disk Management screen?

I did do some reasearch on youtube for days but I couldn't find the correct tutorial for installing a separate raid array.

Thank you for the help, I will give this a try later on today.

Go into BIOS - set it to RAID. Boot windows - install to 500GB drive. Once in Windows, instal Intel Rapid Storage technology software. In here, you can make a RAID0 array of your two 1TB drives to make a 2TB drive.

No - the IRST is the software for managing the Intel Raid controller on your mobo. As your mobo is older, it was called Matrix Storage... has since been renamed. Sorry - I misread - though your OS was already installed. Set BIOS to RAID - boot windows, should have no issues seeing the controller. Install to the 500GB drive. Once installed, install the Matrix Storage controller software. This allows you to manage the hardware raid. From there, create your RAID array using the other drives.

Also, during post, you can hit CTRL+I (i think it is) when prompted and create your array in there - just a little harder as it isn't to intuative...

I followed Wats method which 100% worked with no confusion.

I set my motherboard Sata configuration to AHCI and installed Windows 7Pro

Also at the installation screen I included the AHCI Driver from my USB stick and waited for windows to install

Upon next boot I changed the Sata to RAID and ran the configuration via CTRL+I at post and set the drives I wanted.

then went back in to the BIOS and set The Sata back to AHCI booted into windows and then had to confirm the 1.8TB Partition in windows Disk Management.

Works Flawlessly for video capture.

-Note

I installed the Intel Storage Matrix to see what feautres there were and then shortly after uninstalled it

which has destroyed my RAID Array

If you Re Install the Matrix software the RAID Array works, I didn't think the software would change things on a Hardware level.

It's not just 'software', it's the driver.

Ive dont like crap software raids in windows disk manager before, and if I have taken one of the disks out of the array and attatch it to another machine it has problems reading it....Unless I am remembering this situation wrongly...but i think i am not...I would just always stick to the reliable real RAID, bail from software.
