Internet = Terrible

So my internet download speed is terrible, and I don't know if its my tech limiting it or not. If you guys could help me out that would be great since I don't know where to begin or what questions to ask. For reference my download speed on Steam is around 167 KB/S....I know it's bad..

It's your Internet service plan...

 

Upgrade it.

Or hes using wifi

In which case buy an ethernet cable

What ISP are you using? e.g. BT, TalkTalk, Comcast, AT&T etc

What's your speedtest download/upload speeds? speedtest.net

How are you connecting to your router? e.g. wifi/ethernet

Do you have high-voltage (at least 240V) cables running close to your telephone line?

for $42 you can get some pretty beast connections compared to yours

 

Seconded. Here in the UK that's enough money for an unlimited Fiber internet service.

I'm disappointed that companies are actually allowed to sell internet that bad. 58ms ping basically renders playing fast-paced mmo games useless if you're into that sort of thing.

Let me explain how disappointed I am in the simplest way possible.

 

Your broadband: $9, very slow.

My fibre: $19 (£12), fastest in the area (+ line rental, which everyone has to pay anyway since no telephone companies in the area actually own the lines)

For only $10 extra, you could get unlimited internet that you can actually feel being fast. I'm not sure what equivalents other US providers have to offer. From what I see, Earthlink is more about profit than providing a usable service. If I was paying for your internet, I would have switched providers a long time ago, or maybe be screaming down the phone line at them 24/7.
