Here in VA in addition to the heat we get crazy high humidity, usually over 90%, which is the biggest problem with summer heat.

Though i have central air i have been toying with the idea of getting a dehumidifier to help keep the inside of the house less muggy.

The idea goes that if i can at least keep it dry then i will be able to keep the thermostat on a higher setting as it will be more comfortable.

since i have a really old AC unit this would equate to a tidy savings on the electricity bill even though the dehumidifier would be running 24/7.

Curious to see if  anyone has done this themselves, and what their experience was.

my experiences with a dehumidifier

when i was younger, it broke into our house one night

it killed my whole family, drying them to a crisp. not even the cat was spared

that night, my heart decided on justice.

that night, i became dehumidifier man

I tried my best to laugh

We had one back when I lived in Taiwan. It'd remove the water from the air and we get a hucket of water in the end. It's kind of crazy.

I have a dehumidifier. You have to empty the water every day, and it gave me nosebleeds the air was so dry, but I live in New York so you probably won't have that same problem

I've always preferred humid heat over dry heat. I don't mind the sweating as much as I hate the dry skin :/

Completely agree, dry skin is the worst. I end up drinking a lot then I have to piss every 5 seconds!

I bought one to help with all the ESD in my room. It was crazy bad, I ended up killing my mouse before I bought it lol

The most important thing for a humidifier, is to be able to be refilled, without disassembly. Mine has a waterfall type setup that pumps water up to a misting element, and it has a slope to refill water in. I can add water to it while its running and I don't have to do a thing. Just poor a cup/pitcher in.

SO MUCH EASIER, than having to unplug the unit, and removing the water container, or even worse on the cheaper units, pooring water in carefully with a funnel

let me go get my model no.

EDIT: I now realize, you are talking about a DEhumidifier, not a humidifier

I love humidifiers. Had to use one in AZ. I'd just put my face over it and breath in the vapours.

To each is own, personally i'm the opposite as the humidity really sucks the energy out of me.

I have a dehumidifier. You have to empty the water every day, and it gave me nosebleeds the air was so dry, but I live in New York so you probably won't have that same problem

Whichever unit I get It would be one with a hose attachment and a pump so that it would be self draining. It would be routed to a sink or some other option.  Eventually it will end up being used in the garage to keep things a bit more dry in there.

Usually air conditioners dehumidify the air as well...

They do but my outside unit is 23 years old and my air handler is 14 years old, add to that and I have single pain windows that are original to the house which means the AC runs constantly unless I set it at a higher setting. Generally on a hot , 90-100F (32.2-37.8 C) degree day anything under 78F (25.5C) degrees on the thermostat means the AC never turns off, but at the same time never hits its target.

Hence why I am contemplating the de-humidifier as it would help remove the muggy atmosphere without having the AC run constantly.
