Powerline adapters

Go to solution Solved by ChineseChef,

Hello everyone,

Currently I am using wifi  for my laptop and its pretty crap, so I am now looking to buy a powerline adapter. I have found this powerline adapter and all I want to know is how much is 500Mbps in megabytes per second?

I was in pretty much the same scenario a while back, using laptop with slow/bad wifi.  I got a pair of these (same speed, earlier model).  They work great, very reliable.  Speed is usually in the 30-50 Mbps if its the only thing on the outlet, if I plug in the laptop power to the same outlet I get around 10-15 Mbps.  Not very fast, but it was still way faster and more reliable than the wifi (which was key for me).

Well, 1 Megabyte is 8 Megabits, so just divide by 8.

8 bits in a byte so...

500/8 =62.5

So in megabytes per second this is 62.5. Or 62.5 MBps

I don't like 2D games...I just couldn't get into them.. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'd be careful buying a power line adapter.

Most likely you won't get those speeds and a lot of people's power line including my own breaks after about 8 months- 1 year of use.

I'd stray away if you can, run that ethernet cord :P

i'm gonna add this, i did tests on those exact powerlans just today.

i got between 10-40Mbps going between worst case scenario, and "what most users do"

the 500Mbps on the box are usually specific testing conditions, and are in a lot of cases not even the speed on one pair of powerlans, but totalled over an entire network of multiple powerlans.

EDIT: in best condition one pair of those can hit 100Mbps. (spotted that on the spec list, it has an 100Mbit ethernet port)

I'm the one manikyath tested these powerLANs for. I'm using them in optimal conditions and they're hitting a low downloadspeed of 60Mbps and a high of 85Mbps. Considering this is over a Cat5 cable at the start, I think it's most definitely a success!
