Hard Drive Icons problem.

Go to solution Solved by YoYo155,

I think it changes during reboot. I restarted explorer.exe and it didn't change back for a moment.

Mine is exactly the same as yours. I ran process monitor, then what?

Procmon won't help you in this case, it was directed at the user above my original post.

We have the same problem. "" If I try to change the icons back to normal or any other kind of icon, I can see them flash the icon quickly, but then it just stays at what it is

"". The icons of the drives do this. They displayed the icons correctly for a millisecond then back to the unknown icon.

I tried everything Google can offer. But still nothing. Rebuilding "Icon Cache", deleting 'autosave.inf', and other things. Only drives C and D only has this. Other drive icons like USBs are displaying properly. Here's a Picture.rhpp.png

Thanks!

Just a thought. This random shutdowns

isn't connected to the bios thing of some sort?

It could be, but I highly doubt it. You could go ito the bios and set everything back to factory default to see if it helps.

I checked all the connections. Everything seems ok. But still keeps restarting, even in the windows boot animation.

Just to get things straight. Your computer just restarts right? You don't get a blue screen or a freeze?

oh my god. Even in bios. It shuts down.

Ok, a couple of things you can check.

  • Pull out the motherboard and check if the back is touching anything made of metal and check if you have all of the motherboard standoffs installed.
  • If this doesn't solve it, then try another PSU

Motherboard isn't touching anything. Standoffs are all in. I think I'll just buy a power supply. See if it works.

If you have the option, try another powersupplie first. It is most likely the powersuppli, but I can't be certain.

Jump the PSU and let it run for a bit.

The case your using wouldn't cause your computer to shut down (unless maybe if it wasn't vented properly and things overheated) so it must be something else. Did you shut down at all before switching cases? I'm thinking it could have been a software issue (though kinda unlikely). You said everything was plugged in all the way? Did you bump anything around while you where taking the hardware out of your old case or putting it in your new one?

Yeah, try jumping the PSU with a fan or something connected and see whether it stays on. To jump it, get a paperclip and connect the green wire to any black wire then turn it on, or check this link. The fan should start spinning. If it just carries on spinning for longer than your longest time between crashes, your PSU is not necessarily good, but if it fails, it's definitely your PSU, so buy a new, branded one. For your computer, 500W should be enough. Report back with the results.

I don't think so.

Jumped the psu. I'll be going to school so I'll leave this until I get home. Fans are working properly. If this lasts for more than 3 hours, then it may not be the psu. Right?

Might not, but it still could be. There are all sorts of things that can cause a PSU to turn off, and this will test it to see whether it will just stay on. You may also have to account for load, motherboard etc. But if it turns off, you need to replace it.

Just got home from school. 7 hours straight, the fans are still working. I also included the CD ROM. What now? :S

OK, so it either fails when under load or there's something else wrong. Is there any way you could either test the PSU in another computer or test another PSU in yours? It could easily be that because it's an unbranded PSU, the output isn't clean or is not reaching the rated wattage, and you're running out of power. 500W should be enough, but if you're only getting 300W, say, you'll have a bit of a problem. If you can't test it, I would suggest that if you have the money, a new PSU would be a good idea anyway because the a bad (nobrand) PSU could damage the rest of the system.
