Hi All

Looking for some advice on ram speeds. From what i can gather speeds do not generally give any performance differences, but in regards to overclocking the CPU the connection seems to change the overclock available.

The cpu, motherboard and ram are the following:

Intel i7 5930K

MSI x99 Gaming 7

G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb Kits

Is there any difference between the 2400, 2666, 2800 and 3000 kits in regards to me overclocking the CPU?

I understand that to run the 3000 ram at that speed the XMP profile will overclock the CPU as well technically as the base clock will go from 100 to 125. Is there any benefit to any other speeds, the reason i ask is finding stock of the 3000 speed ram can be difficult and of course any money saved can be moved to another part.

i7 5960x, 16Gb Corsair 3200, MSI x99 Gaming 9, 2x SLI MSI 980 Ti Gaming 6G, Corsair HX1000i, Intel 750 Series PCI-E, Phanteks Primo Orange, Custom Watercooled.

Get the cheapest kit in the capacity you need that is on your board's QVL.

If you did end up with a kit requiring a 125 strap it's not the end of the world. Just takes a bit of mental math and knowing your way around your BIOS. In regards to OCing, your intervals will be +/- 125 per multiplier, as opposed to 100. Worst case scenario you end up 25-75MHz shy of your theoretical max.
