Ok so im throwing my brother a computer just using some old computers we have together.

I have an old Athlon 64 x2

with 2gb ram

on a Winfast motherboard

unfortunately thats all i know about the components.

Would it be worth strapping like a 760 on it and trying to game on medium settings or should we just give up and build a new one.

No budget.

i have an athlon 64 myself (the mobo caught fire, so well..) and they're actually quite capable chips, so the athlon 64 x2 shouldnt be too bad.

i wouldnt recommend strapping a recent GPU to it tho...

if you still have empty RAM slots, that's gonna be your first priority. the next thing will be finding a GPU for it, i would go either for an old GPU, or for a media card from nvidia (GT cards)

That cpu will bottleneck the holly hell out of a 760, and that tiny amount of ram will bottleneck everything like it was trying to sift the deserts of saudi arabia.

For gaming, a minimum of 4gbs is required in 90% of games.

that computer will web browse. That's pretty much it. It might be able to play very basic flash games, but that's pretty much it.

what about a radeon 4970?

that sounds about in the right ballpark.

should mention you wont be playing latest triple A titles on that system.

its a fun way to explore older games, and dont have to worry of it catching fire, because its old parts anyways.
