I live in Sweden. Going to move to Los Angeles next summer and was wondering... I have a new 3ds xl and games for it I bought in Sweden, I know that these games will not work on the next gen Nintendo console if I buy it in the US in a few years. So im curious, should I buy my future games on the eshop on my Nintendo ID account or is the ID also locked to Sweden?

3DS is of course region blocked, so you can play NTSC games on your 3DS and you can't play your PAL 3DS games on an NTSC 3DS.

It seems like you can't change your country of residence freely. That doesn't mean you can't play your digital games, but just keep that in mind the currency in the store will still be euro (as opposed to US Dollar).

Maybe you can send an email to Nintendo, because they might give you a more conclusive answer.

I have done some digging and apparently I cannot do a system transfer of a nintendo ID created on an EU device to a US device in order to keep my eshop games. So either way, when I get the latest handheld in the US in a few years, I will have to create a new nintendo ID.

I asked in the first place because I thought maybe if i bought games on the eshop and then transferred my account to the future device bought in the US, I would still be able to play unlike the region locked 3ds cartridges. Turns out I will have to get new games for the new device all in the US, and when I want to play the games I have now, I will have to go back to the EU 3ds console.

It is really a shame because I will have to import games from Sweden until the next gen handheld arrives and I can buy it in the US. Does this seem right to you?

Yeah, it's quite a shame they have region lock (still/again)

Your options would be:

1. Sell your system and games in Sweden and buy in the US

2. Take your system and games and import games from Europe (really most of Europe would work, since PAL region).

It just depends on when Nintendo decides to remove the region lock on the 3DS.. (because modders have been quite busy with it already)

Well it wouldnt really be a problem importing games until the next round of 3ds's but after that I would buy a US handheld with US games.

Another question... If nintendo did lift the region lock for all products in the future would older games be affected by this? In other words is the region lock on consoles and cartridges physical, or software?

- I would assume so

- Software it seems

See this article: http://kotaku.com/3ds-region-locking-can-be-disabled-with-a-little-work-1496809705

This is from some time ago, but it was apparently possible for some hackers to remove the region block, proving it's a software thing.

It is not for the New 3DS though.

But I have no idea when Nintendo will remove the region block from the 3DS (if ever)
