Is it possible to use Windows Server 2012 as a NAS operating system, and not necessarily, YET, being able to access it from outside of my home network? If so does anyone know how easy this would be to setup or if there is a step by step guide somewhere on the basic installation process? Thank you.

You're basically just configuring remote desktop. You'll just need to forward the port through your router. Port number by default is 3389.

So essentially once Server 2012 is installed I just have to set up remote desktop on it and allow port 3389 through the router then it will show up? I'm not sure how in-depth you know server 2012, but what about configuring multiple hard drives on that desktop?

For configuring those drives you'll find it easier to setup a VPN and have both devices in the VPN rather than try and share those drives in other methods.

Sorry but the only VPN I am familiar with is the way to mask or change an IP address, I am guessing that is not what you are referring too?

Share the folders with the network, create a VPN from your router, have the laptop join the VPN externally, the networked folders will then be accessible.

Is that going to open the server to the network or does it have to have each individual computer within the network join through the VPN?

So what'd happen is the drives will be shared on the network though depending on the setup (domain, homegroup or individual credentials), the VPN will then allow a PC to appear in the local network while being connected externally. Then the PC can see the shared drives.

That clears a bit of it up, thank you. I am going to try and set it up initially just via the homegroup and will branch out from there in the future. Thank you Very much for the assistance!
