mod edit, alpenwasser

Since AMD vs Nvidia: Keep it civil people. If somebody steps out of line, just report them, don't flame back.

Thank you very much, and have a nice stay. :)

????

im really torn between these 4 cards, i need to know if the first 2's price difference is enough to outweigh the performance loss. some of the games ill be playing are CS : GO, Bioshock, Leauge of Legends, possibly GTA 5, Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Phantom. the prices i found right now are $220 for the 960, $230 for the 380, $320 for the 970, $325 for the 390. Is the extra 100$ worth it? ill be playing mostly 1080p but also 1440p for the easier games.

390 (only for the extra vram) >970=290x (so get the cheaper of the 2) >380>960

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

390 if it's cheaper, 970 if not.

The 8GB of VRAM makes no sense in the 390, you're not futureproofing, you're not going to use more than half of it and both the 390 and 970 are not capable of rendering decent framerates in games that require 3.5+GB of VRAM.

Crossfire and SLI with the 970-390 doesn't make sense, since there's better single GPU high end options, like the 980Ti.

Remember that the 390 is an overvolted 290. An overclocked 970 stills beats it using way less power.

EDIT:

Also check your PSU if you get a 390, you need a beefy one, the 300 series raised power consumption by a lot, and you need a very good PSU to handle and OC the card.

CORRECTION: the 300 series LOWERED power consumption as expressed by the lowered TDP compared to the 200 series. The only exception being the Fury series. The 290X had about 280W TDP IIRC and the 390X has 215W. the 970 has 170W TDP and while it may seem like it makes a whole lot of a difference, if you have good airflow and a half-decent PSU then you're not likely to have issues. Honestly, the 390 has the best option in this case. As for the VRAM, it will probably max out at 6 GB before frams start dropping bellow 40-45 but that's still more than the  970 which has been stuttering in maxed out games now, let alone the future. More is never bad.

Anyhow, if you want to save money, get the 380. It's a refreshed 285 which was better than the 960 by a decent bit and better than the 280 by a small amount.

EDIT: To give an example. I used a 200W TDP 280 with a barely passable Thermaltake PSU for about 5 months with the only issue being coil whine (which may or may not have been the PSU's fault as voltages here are VERY unstable). Anyhow, point being, no need to get a  80+ titanium PSU for a slightly higher TDP. My old old CM elite 460W ran a 6850 fine for a year and is still running (ran a 5670 for 2.5 years prior). PSUs nowadays are not as easy to fail and will usually give you a sign if anything is amiss.
