What LGA 775 CPU?

Go to solution Solved by iHardware Shelden,

Xeon, uses less power at same speed and it is "newer":

-snip-

So I am guessing the Xeon should work then. Looks like i'll get that then :) Thanks!

So I have an Intel DQ35JO LGA 775 Motherboard and want to get new CPU for it until I can use my 780i board.

These are the 2 cpus I have been looking at, Xeon X3230 & Core 2 Extreme QX6700, and from what I can tell the Core 2 Extreme will work on the motherboard but not sure about the Xeon

(The Xeon is not LGA 771, it is a 775 processor)

I am leaning toward the Xeon due to its almost exact specs but less power consumption.

What one should I get? (I don't plan on overclocking unless I end up using the 780i board, power consumption is more of a problem to me since this system will be running 24/7)

Edit: Should have looked at your Xeon more closely. If it isn't officially supported, you could mod the BIOS and inject the needed microcode to make your motherboard recognize it.

For 24/7 the Xeon will be a healthier choice.

The QX6700 is a lot of fun for overclocking, but maybe hold off and get a QX9650 after you get the 780i if you really want to see some impressive 775 action. Those 1333 chips still pack a punch even today.

I ran mine on my 790i against my 4670k, and it managed to keep up alright.

Xeon requires a physical hardware mod and a bios mod to work, but is the preferred option. I have a EVGA 790i with a Xeon E5472 and a Asus Maximus Formula with a Xeon X3363 installed. There is a thread in the tutorial section on how to mod the socket, apply the needed pin reversal sticker and mod the BIOS. It isn't difficult, in my opinion, and the benefitsare well worth it. I think it is fun.

why would he need to mod the mobo, if Intel says the CPU will work? He wants to get the X3230, which has 775 pins.

I edited my post. I read "Xeon is a 771 not a 775".
