m.2 ssc VS SATA ssd

I'm currently finalizing my new gaming PC and i have one thing to consider

 

Should i use the traditional SSD as storage via SATA connectors OR go with M.2 solution?

 

I read and watched some videos on the M.2 and wanted to know how to use it?

 

i want it for the OS and install some games

An M.2 SSD over PCI E will be a lot faster than the SATA SSD only problem is pricing and motherboard compatibility. If your mobo supports one go with an M.2 if not a SATA SSD is still more affordable and offers pretty good speeds.

If you can have a M.2 go with it, especially if it's PCI-E capable.

Pcie m.2 is faster, however you will still thoroughly enjoy the performance of a traditional sata ssd.

Really depends if the M.2 is a SATA or PCIE capable one.  If it's still a SATA M.2, all you get is a new connector with the same speeds.

Okay, a True M.2 drive will just bury a SSD for speed in almost every case... There are issues however.

 

We've got no idea what motherboard you're using, and some M.2 drives require true UEFI support to be able to boot from (windows recognises them, but to be able to boot from them your BIOS has to be able to recognise them without any aditional driver software)

 

Any PCIe x1 connection is worthless. Those M.2 and wireless combo cards are so slow that SATA3 is quicker.

 

Be careful what you order. While MSATA is quicker in some cases than SATA3 it's effectively SATA express, using the same connections, and a slightly wider transfer lane. This is not M.2, merely the same form factor.

 

Some other things to consider. Samsungs' sm951 was recently released, and as of a couple of days ago the AHCI was the only version released to non-OEM partners. There is also a NVMe version that is on par with the intel 750 (I think it's held back by the lack of thermal mass, and no heatsink....on the bright side it's M.2 form factor...yay)

 

Just some things to consider if you're thinking of buying M.2.

It is situational, for folding build I have to use a SATA SSD since all the PCIe lanes are taken. For my Main PC I probably could go with M.2 but they are too expensive to justify. Actually, if I want any more SSD space I have to go M.2.

my previous build i regret not getting the best motherboard so i went all out on this one

It can fit in that budget if you want it to. High end sata ones used to be that much or more not too long ago. Those will do 1600MB/s read.
