that depends on the definition of cpu core's, it's not a term that is being regulated by an authority and intel's definition of a core is differs from amd's, by intel definition a core includes the FPU and l2 cache in it the fx 6300 has 3 cores, by amd's definition it has 6 cores and 3 modules. the reason why people say it only has 3 cores is because it has 3 fpu's and that is important for gaming, so people call it "3 core cpu with hardware multithreading" which is not technically true, it is how it behaves, it's like a faster hyperthreading

Ahh, so you have an LGA 1155 socket motherboard. That limits you to Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge generation CPUs. So things like the i5 2500 or the i5 3550 for example. They are not terribly difficult to find even now so a simple swap upgrade would be easy. Anything in the i3 or i5 lineup will be a massive upgrade for you. Like night and day difference.

 

If you wanted a Haswell CPU you'd need to do a motherboard swap to LGA 1150 and if you really wanted to go AMD you'd need to swap to AM3+  for the FX lineup or the FM2+ for the A series. Honestly you'd be best off just upgrading what you have as long as your motherboard supports it. If you can give us the motherboard make and model we can figure it out.

Ah, alright! Now you can see how much I know of CPUs and motherboards. I contacted a local retailer and said that if he finds a good CPU for a decent price, he'd contact me. So I'll update when I got it.

FX-63XX can be OCed and in SOME games, NOT ALL! The FX-63XX beats the i3 just barely or get a draw and sometimes right below it.

 

Swapping boards is childplay.. seriously..

 

Take your time (like ANYTHING you wanna do correctly) and you'll be fine.

i5 is gunna be about the same as the i7 in gaming performance, probably faster actually as newer Haswell i5's have better performance at the same clocks.

/If I was on a budget, I'd straight up hands down buy a cheap temp i3 Intel CPU and have the ability to use it and upgrade later to something that actually works.

Unlike the FX 6300 for cheap, and having NO upgrade path for enhancing your gaming performance (esp the minimums)

Fx isn't good. It's acceptable, but not good. No one under any circumstances should be buying Fx processors for gaming at the moment.

Most PC gamers like MMO so they should avoid FX!
