GTA 5 low fps with an MSI GTX 970 4G

alright so basically everything is in the title, I'm running low-med settings and the FPS is dipping down to 45 fps which is ridiculous for a 970

 

so please if anyone knows a fix please let me know  

 

specs 

 

i5 3570k

Corsair vengeance 32 GB ram

GTX 970 from MSI 

the game is on a 250 gig crucial SSD

Can you turn the grass off in GTA V?

What resolution are you playing at? What does your GPU usage look like in MSI Afterburner? Are you running the latest drivers? Have you overclocked? Increasing the clock speed should help get your FPS up.

I play at 1080p. gpu usage is spiking up and down, (http://gyazo.com/a631448abb5acd0fc2a63f95819aea94) no I don't have the latest drivers because over 350.12 I can't keep a stable overclock for some reason, I did overclock my clock speed 1506 Mhz

Since you overclocked your GPU, what temperatures do you have and what do your clocks look like when playing GTA 5?

Since you overclocked your GPU, what temperatures do you have and what do your clocks look like when playing GTA 5?

According to his MSI Afterburner in the first screenshot, the temps max out at 66 degrees, and the core and memory clocks are constant. GTA V can be heavy on the CPU; my 4670k at 4.3 GHz can get up to 80-90% usage. I wonder if that could be the problem...

I have a 3570K @ 4.2GHz and I get a minimum of ~65FPS in GTA 5. My 970 is overclocked to 1.46GHz. I believe I have the game set to the highest settings in the normal graphical settings.

Does it make any difference for you if the CPU isn't overclocked? We don't know OP's CPU clock speed. I wouldn't think it's the problem, but I want to make sure.

I'm almost sure it's the problem. I don't see why your GPU should be bottlenecked by the CPU, since it's a fairly powerful Intel, but it might be. Have you tried overclocking it?

Can you run RealTemp? I don't think it's throttling, but you can use it to check the CPU load. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but if it's pinned at 100%, then it's definitely the problem.

I believe it was was thermal throttling, I checked the temps and they were hitting the 90c mark, I just re-applied the thermal paste, and I'm going to see if it happens again in GTA 5

Then there's the problem. Are you using the stock cooler? Though, in any case, the stock cooler should be enough at stock speeds...
