So the other day I won a 500$ Amazon gift card. I was considering upgrading either my mobo+processor or my graphics card.

If I were to go for the mobo+processor combo I would grab the Maximus VII formula + 4790k for about $640+tax. If I go for the graphics card I would probably get a GTX 980 for about $550 (depending on version I decide to get.

Here are my current specs:

Mobo: Asus P8Z68 M-Pro (a budget board...)

Processor: i5 2500k (@4.5GHz)

Graphics Card: EVGA Superclocked GTX 680

My question to you is which do you think would be better to upgrade? If it's the processor and mobo combo I don't mind putting out the extra 200, because I know they will last a while. I've already got adequate cooling for that combo (H80i). Unfortunately the 980ti is slightly out of my price bracket.

I should probably clarify I'm not really looking for better gaming performance. I wish I could upgrade the mobo without having to upgrade the processor. I know I can get a Z77 board, but I'd rather not but old chipset just to support my processor, which is already a few years old. That's why I'm opting for the Z97 chipset

Thanks in advance!

You would think Ubisoft would support the Bulldozer based architectures more given their digging themed names like bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller and Excavator.

I'd say GPU. A GPU upgrade would have more effect on performance than the CPU+Motherboard Upgrade.

DON't waste money on a maximus buy one for around 100$ and buy a ssd or more ram. something that acutally effects your preformance

I've already got 2 256gb SSDs and 16GB corsair vengance.

I would go for the mobo+cpu upgrade, that cpu will bottleneck a 980 to hell!

I don't think the 2500k would bottleneck a 980. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2431927/2500k-5ghz-bottlenecking-gtx-980.html
