I'm getting ready to build my first system but I'm having trouble with what I should do about the OS. I want to go with Windows 8.1 but I don't want to fork over the extra $100.

I know I don't really want to go with Linux or even SteamOS or something like that. I want Windows but I'm really not sure how to go at this.

Should I just man up and pay the $100? Should I maybe go the cheap route and pirate? Or are there any cheaper ways to get Windows? Please let me know because I'm going to need an OS at some point lol.

Try reddit /r/softwareswap

Also, students get it much cheaper if not free - if you're in school, talk to your school IT person. Or here:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Windows-8.1-Pro-for-Students/productID.288769600

If you care about legalities - Try to make sure it is a retail version on G2A or Reddit, not OEM - since it is against the microsoft terms of use to use OEM copies for personal computers.

Be honest bout it. Please don't pirate. Okay look, go for Windows 7 temporarily (Not the pirated version), and get ALL the updates so you get the windows 10 logo in the taskbar, if ya still dont have it you either pirated it or if that's not the case look online how to reserve Windows 10. When Windows 10 will be released you'll get that. If you pirate Windows 7 you cant get Windows 10.

But aren't those just verification codes which means I would need to install Windows through a disc or through usb? Then I would put in the verification code?
