update! i has a few new cpu's to do trial by voltage in the ic7 max3  :P

the first is a brilliant ebay special 2.8ghz HT northwood which set me back a whopping £2.90

gallery_16915_331_1797133.jpg

the second is a 3ghz HT northwood which set me back £4.99 and its a brand new cpu by the looks of it  :)

gallery_16915_331_1315059.jpg

^they are the lastest, but i have a few more to test that i've collected over the past few months ..................................

gallery_16915_331_90696.jpg

obviously only 9 of them are socket 478 and the bigger one with pins on the left is an am2 single core athlon and the 2 lga 775 cpu's are pentium dual cores for when i get round to buying a rampage I or II extreme (can't remember which is 775). i will be testing some of them on friday :D

It was .i have 3 pc's that ive been getting parts for all at once, so they dont get used very often. I have been doingsome benchmarking with the 5950 ultra about 2 weeks ago but i couldn't find this thread because it had gone so far down. :(

many set backsthisafternon but ihavegot into the swingof things now. Im currently slowly ramping up the clock speed on the 2.8ghz northwood. It has also turned out that my 3ghz p4 is a prescott and that my motherboard doesn't like it very much so it doesn't allow me to oc it and it doesn't see the hyperthreading. Will do be posting some 8400gs vs 5950 ultra screenshots and then some screenshots from overclocking this 2.8ghz p4, with cinebench r11.5 and some super pi scores.

ok i've just finished for today  :)

i'll start off with the Athlon ii x2 220@3.7ghz+8400gs vs Pentium 4 3.2ghz HT@3.6ghz+ fx5950 ultra in 3d mark 01 and 3d mark 03

this is the best score from the 8400gs

gallery_16915_331_192183.jpg

and the 5950 ultra

gallery_16915_331_292643.jpg

and in 3d mark 03

gallery_16915_331_1461.jpg

gallery_16915_331_296101.jpg

now as you can see they are similarly matched even though to 5950 ultra is over 5 years older, its just a beast for its age, however i have an ATI HD3850 on the way so it might be getting replaced. B)

Ive been doing some ocing of the 2.8ghz ht northwood p4 which i got on wednesday. its gone ok and i got to 3.35ghz on 1.775v. you can see the cinebench score increase as the clock goes up, i didn't manage to get 0.6 though so i still need to do some tweaking and fine tuning to get it done. **CPUZ is wrong in most cases and the clock on cinebench is correct to what i set it at in the bios.**

gallery_16915_331_30184.jpg

gallery_16915_331_79948.jpg

i did get it to boot at 3.45ghz but i wouldn't run anything  :( . once i've got going its been a good afternoons overclocking. i need to do some research into these prescott cpu's that i have and get them to work and overclock on my board properly. the next update will be when i get the 3850 or get a prescott working properly. also i am willing to try any benchmarks that will run if you provide a link to download the benchmark, i can't find copies of 3d mark 2000 that work at the moment.

thanks all for now people :)

Cool, I didn't realize that Sempron > P4.

yep p4's are probably worse than bulldozzer. earlier p4's were slower than p3's!

They were awful. It was thanks in part to Intel's awful Netburst. Once they went back to the Pentium Pro way of doing things (Core 2) it was plain sailing from there..

I like this thread muchly. Shows you can have tons of fun with computers for small piles of pennies. I also love that 5950. I had a BFG 5950u and it was a wonderful card. Lovely polished nickel heatsink with two fans on :D

that version doesn't seem to work. i'm not sure if its because it doesn't support xp or something else

i just got the replacement for the 5950 ultra today. i didn't think it would come till next week! anyway here are some pics

the hd3850 has 2 dvi ports instead of the dvi+vga on the 5950 ultra. this doesn't benefit me at the moment but might later on. the hd 3850 is a single slot card compared with the 5950.

gallery_16915_331_300752.jpg

gallery_16915_331_505901.jpg

gallery_16915_331_1132761.jpg

they use a slightly different slot with 3 gaps on the 5950 and 2 gaps on the 3850

gallery_16915_331_1702019.jpg

the 3850 is a bit longer than the 5950 to make up for not being dual slot.

some pic of it in the rig.

it does require an 8 pin vs the single molex. the psu only has an 6 pin pci power and i only have a 2 molex to 8 pin connector not a 6 to 8, which is a bit annoying considering i should have 2 of them from my 7970 box but msi decided to throw them away along with my cf bridge!  :( i will see if it will be ok on molex then do some testing and benchmarks with it later today or tomorrow. it'll be early next week before i can get a 6 to 8 pin.

i can't do too much with the 3850 at the moment overclocking wise because i'm running it off dual molex to 8 pin instead of 6 to 8 pin because the 6 to 8 pin adapters that i have were sent back with my lightning. i think i am being limited by power, because if i overclock past a certain point the gpu clock drops like a stone when it is under load. i have done a small overclock on it though so here are the results

HD3850@670mhz (stock)

gallery_16915_331_36131.jpg

and oced

gallery_16915_331_123001.jpg

it can't be directly compared to the 5950 ultra scores as i was using the 2.8ghz p4 ht instead of the 3.2ghz ht which is a about 10% faster. i will do a full comparison when i put the 3.2ghz one back in with some nice graphs. i still have some testing to do with the 2.8ghz before i move back though.
