i7 4790k vs i7 5820k with gtx 980 ti sli

i plan to game on 1440p 144hz ips and editing video. are video editing programs more gpu bound or cpu. is it worth buy the more expensive x99 platform or get the z97 because there is not much difference between the two.

Ted is correct, in firestrike you will see a big difference but In games no.

If you don't already have a motherboard for z97, you are crazy not to go x99. Yeah there is definitely a price premium but I would definitely say it's worth it. I mean you have a cpu that would potentially be 50% faster for about 25% more? Especially worth it for editing.

The 4790k will allow for more overclocking, you'll have better single thread performance due to this, which will make 90% of games perform better on the 4790k.

The 5820 will be noticeably faster in anything cpu bound, including the few games which can use more than 4 cores if your a bit of as multi-tasker.

 

That's not to say that the 4790k isn't a very capable chip in those tasks though.

go with i7 5820k because later on can up grade to i7 5960x (if you gain benefits of having more cores) or the up coming haswell-e but mostly likely skylake-e processors while the z97 is maxed out with the i7 4790k.
