I can get an S3 on contract for $80, or I can get an S4 on contract for $200.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most, ill say that i would be about a 4 on gaming. Otherwise the phone will be used for just basic purposes. I might want to get some sort of emulator for it, though, so I can play retro games.

I'll have to wait longer before I can get the S4.

Is the S4 really worth it?

wow, gnomes!

I would get S4 out of two but I would definitely root and install custom firmware. Default OS of S4 eats up to 50% capacity of the storage, and I am not fan of touchwiz, I just like stock Android. However, if HTC One is on the list, I would get HTC One. Have a look on Google Editon of S4 or HTC One, might changed your mind.

Pardon my English. Not my native language.

I'd go with the S3, none of the S4's features really worth $140 more and given you don't seem to be a power user needing the new processor. The S3 won't lag on anything typical people do day to day since keep in mind this was a flagship phone last year and not much has changed since then.

HTC One is not a possibility, sadly.

I was thinking the same thing.

Well based on what you said, the S3 would seem the better choice.

But keep in mind that if both phones are on contract, you'd be stuck with them for some time, and since the S3 is already older, it would begin to feel dated long before the S4 begins to fall behind the newer flagships. But, being older, the S3 would have more 'hacks' (check XDA developers) available for it.

That said, the S4 has some useless gimmicks (to me) that occupy almost 1/2 the total storage of the device. This means that you would get less storage, if you choose the S4 route, to store games, photos, videos, music etc.

Personally I'd go with the S3 because the the extra money charged on the S4 can't be validated by less storage, and useless gimmicks, even though the S4 has better hardware.
