Cause of blue screen other than overheating

Cosmos_i7

Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me with a problem.

Recently I have gotten 2 blue screens while gaming on Windows 7 in the past week, once in StarCraft 2 and once in Blacklight Retribution and I was wondering what the cause of this may be, I don't think it is overheating because I monitor the temperatures and they rarely go above 70 degrees which is well within the limit of the CPU.

My computer is a late 2009 iMac with a Core 2 Duo E7600 and ATI Radeon 4670. Yes its a Mac but I do believe that the issue may not be hardware based. Hopefully I can put together a custom build soon enough after this one, but for now I need to know what the problem is with the computer. It was really annoying when it cut out in the middle of a decent SC2 game.

Thanks in advance

When it's a thermal issue, it'll usually just shut off and not BSOD. BSOD's are kinda hard to figure out if we don't know what code it gives, that'll determine were the problem is based.

On a side note; they can be very easy to fix though. My main rig BSOD's a lot if I've got a USB plugged into the front for whatever reason. Funtions perferctly fine otherways :>

Clean registry, update all drivers, install windows updates, scan harddrive to check for faults, run RAM test, maybe one of those things will help.

The way I have heard it is that all blue screens are a Ram issue of some type.  I could be system ram or Vram on the gpu, some sound cards have their own ram as do a NIC.  Try running a ram test on your system ram first, any issues will turn up in seconds and move onto removing components with onboard ram like a sound card or NIC.  Blue screens can be hard to track down.  "Chip creep"  (used loosely here) could be responsible, be sure to see that your system ram has not come loose if you move your rig around or the case was knocked.

first thing i would do is run mem test, then i would do a check disk......

you should download bluescreenview and post some screen grabs on here, there will be someone able to interprit them for you,

No most BSOD are caused by software...you get them too when memory goes bad, but generally speaking they are much rarer than software induced BSOD.

Running MEMTEST early on in diags is the way to go, so that it either confirms or rules out a bad stick of ram.

Will do a RAM test overnight then already have it on a disk so that will make it easy for me. The RAM in my iMac was upgraded from 4 to 16GB about 2 years ago I believe. Now has crucial memory in it. So I will post the results of the test here.

The thing is they are very random I did manage to take a picture with my phone very quickly so its slightly blurry but it is something. How do you upload a photo on the forums? I have it saved.

Thanks

Upload the dumps! I will have a look.

If you're PC is configured to spew out dumps (as is it by default) they are located:

C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP / C:\Windows\minidump\*.*

I have located the dump files however I am unable to open them. What application should I use to open the files?

You can use Windbg to open them but you need to know what your doing / looking for -_- .

On the other hand you can zip them and upload them here for us to look, it's your choice.

Rarely accurate :/ .

Besides he is trying to figure out who is his motherboard manufacturer, you can't manually analyze using that tool.

Oops wrong topic on that last part

In the stack trace we can see that it is atikmdag.sys that is calling from user mode into the kernel via dxgkrnl

to notify the OS sub-system that an error has occurred, that is the reason that we saw dxgmms1 as a probable cause

but we now know that it is incorrect.

Here we see that the driver is very outdated.

An update needs to be performed. BUT! make sure to uninstall the old drivers fisrt and Catalyst Control Center in particular!

AND when installing the new driver choose the custom or advanced option and uncheck the catalyst control center check box

in other words don't install it.

atikmdag.sys  -  http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=atikmdag.sys

Once that is done I would stress test my GPU using a software like Unigine Heaven and keeping a close eye on the temps

to rule out any over heating of the GPU and / or other hardware error.

-SIDE NOTE-

Another very old driver is  - IRFilter.sys = http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=IRFilter.sys

I don't know if you use it, but If you don't just remove it.

Thanks will uninstall drivers and install the newer ones. I did notice that previous Blacklight would report that the GPU drivers were only 18 months outdated but recently it increased to 47 months which I thought was strange, may have had something to do with the large Windows update I had to carry out.

The IR receiver driver is for using a remote with the iMac, I do not have the remote so I could get rid of this driver how would I go about doing this though? Is it simply going to control panel and uninstall the program with the driver on it?

As for the BIOS there isn't much I can do since it is a Mac and it doesn't really have a BIOS so I am stuck with the same version as when I bought it in October 2009. Is that date in MM/DD/YY format or DD/MM/YY? I am from the UK so we use the DD/MM/YY format so is it saying it is the 9th March 2009 or 3rd September 2009? Since this iMac only came out in October 2009 the BIOS shouldn't be from March.

Anyway I will uninstall Catalyst control centre and find the latest drivers, then I will use Kombustor to stress test the GPU as I prefer using that.

Thanks

After launching Catalyst control centre it stated that no driver has been installed, I believe it may have been deleted during an update since I recall installing the drivers. Will report back once new drivers have been installed.

Seems to be working fine now, run it through several benchmarks and no problems have occurred yet, will post again if anything does happen but looks like it is solved now.

Thanks

Looks like the problem has returned. I will upload the dump again however I did notice in the blue screen it stating "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed" After that just the generic blue screen text.

MSI afterburner + Windows 7= a big no no.

I believe the format is DD/MM/YYYY.

Just uninstall it that way it shouldn't be called into the kernel (IRFilter).

I have looked through that dump but for the reason mentioned above I suggest you use a different tool to stress your GPU with.

Those are ATI drivers and MSI kombustor I can't verify because they weren't in memory anymore when the dump was taken.

Have you tried putting in the Windows disk and starting a repair? That is if it doesn't have anything to do with video drivers.
