Thanks for all your help

Hi Gang,

My brothers old computer (Really, really old) has crapped itself so we have come up with a budget, and I have designed a system for him for gaming, internet surfing and some sound processing work.

I have searched a few site's here in Australia (including PC Case Gear, Scorptec, Techbuy, and PLE Computers) for the best price for CPU, GPU, RAM, Motherboard, Case, PSU.

Im going to throw in a CPU cooler on top of the budget for his birthday.

PC Case Gear came out on top for almost all pricing -

CPU - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=187_1512&products_id=21808

Motherboard - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_803&products_id=28559

GPU - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1771&products_id=32290

RAM - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186_538_913&products_id=26688

PSU - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_535&products_id=29871

Case - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25_547&products_id=30116

CPU Cooler - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=207_23&products_id=29596

RAM is clocked higher than the motherboard will run at however I figure it will just run at the slower speed, this whole system is a massive step forward compared to his old system so thats not a drama.

Id love it if you guys could please pick holes in this build, raise any concerns about compatibility / usage / whatever

Cheers :)

It looks good, but I'd try save a little bit and go for something like an R9 270x which should be priced similarly to the R7 270.

That's a decent value gaming build ad the ram will run fine at its rated 1600MHz.

What about storage? An SSD would give a big speed boost at relatively low cost.

Sorry I should have mentioned,

I did look at a 860K however its not available in OZ anymore, and a intel quad core was going to be too expensive for this build. You can fan hate AMD chips all you want, intel cant meet the price

we were looking for. The FX chip is a great (and even a little overkill) though its a little more expensive than we were originally going to spend. Still meets the 95W TDP of the 860K I was going to get.

The budget he has raised is $700 Australian - the CPU cooler Im throwing in as extra for his birthday so thats not included in the $700.

Storage is already sorted in a 2TB Hard drive, his first upgrade will be an SSD.

Cheers,

Go to newegg.com and you can order a 860k for 100$ AUS and they ship to Australia.

If your brothers budget is 700$ drop the SSD from my parts list.

Ok theres something I didn't know.

Last time I looked at Newegg.com Oz site there was very little I could get from them. Thanks for the headsup :)

Order everything that's not the CPU locally so you don't get hit with massive customs fees.

Do you think Ill have any drama with the CPU cooler and putting that graphics card in the 1st slot seeing as the GPU has a backplate?

Reviews on that cooler say it will encroach on the 1st PCIe slot..

Is that with a intel mounting or a AMD mounting?

From Final Thoughts -

"However, if there is anything to be aware of with this cooler choice, it is the possibility of encroaching upon the first PCI-e slot. Make sure that if you have to populate the first PCI-e slot, the card does not have a back plate, otherwise they will be rubbing, vibrating, and potentially making noise as they touch each other."

I guess its fairly self explanatory

You might want to get a different cooler then.
