Maybe give a bit more info. What device are you connecting via HDMI?

You can't have .1 of a channel either, "5.1" surround is 6 channels, 5 for speakers and one for the subwoofer.

Yeah

When I get to the sound devices, I usually have to go to configure and select 5.1 or 7.1. Otherwise nothing works in surround.

The other thing is your receiver has to be in "direct" mode, so that all channels are sending the right signal to the right speaker. Sometimes there are funny DSP settings that mix channels. My remote calls it "straight" or "direct" it's one of the two.

Under configure it just says 2 channels.

It could be my not completely functioning amd drivers and win 10

Yup. Didn't realize you were running windows 10. Stay tuned I guess. You will find out in about five weeks lol

AMD has a specific checkbox for audio when installing drivers. If you unchecked it the first time you installed it. Just reinstall the drivers and make sure the hdmi audio driver is checked. Worth a try.

Oh no I wouldn't wait that long lol

You could always get an optical cable if your mobo supports optical out. But I know you've read my concerns with it for gaming.

Umm I'm going to throw it out there also that not every HDMI cable is made equally. I mean technically if your pc/receiver connect and you can hear two channel audio, you should be able to get six channels to work also. But an updated HDMI cable might help. I got the Amazon Basics cable it's actually pretty high quality. Works great.

No optical out

And I guess I could try a new HDMI cable. I thought mine was fine but I just remembered I got it free with my monitor stand...

I'll try other cables laying around my house, and if that doesn't work, I'll buy one

So it only works if my monitor is not connected to HDMI out on receiver, and is instead connected via dvi.

Problem with that is then I can't have two monitors because my GPU only supports 2 HDMI/dvi out.

But at least I got 5.1 working.

Now because I have 5.1 on 7.1 system, what should I connect rear speakers to, rear or side?

I think side, that seems to work, but not sure

Yeah I have to do some funny things with my setup as well. The more I spend, the more I have to tinker around. It's ridiculously annoying.

Can't you just choose 5.1 from Windows? I'm not sure you're going to find a severe difference. My receiver is pretty cool because you can turn off certain speakers, and the missing channel is then split between the two on each side of the channel that has been turned off.

Grab the instruction manual online and look through it. Might be some helpful stuff in there. Help out your SAT scores...  ^_^ reading comprehension +1

Yeah OK I'll look at that.

I'm just glad I got 5.1 working in windows

Yeah! Now time to test out some games! If you have Bioshock Infinite, the whole chapter at the carnival is pretty amazing. There is noise and dialog from every channel (except front center).

Yeah bf4 didn't really seem to take advantage of rear. Or I need to turn up rear channels. And I can't do that, or configure my speaker set up until I get a remote
