Alright guys, i've been in the market for a new gpu for quite awhile now, i have to say i am very disappointed with both nvidia and amd.  Nvidia 900 series is pretty good, however the company have been assholes with the series: the 970 vram issue, the titan x launched right before 980 ti, the 980 being overpriced imo.  And on the amd side, they've just rebranded for the third freaking time in a row--minus the fury which is honestly extremely disappointing considering it rarely beats out a 980 ti. I just don't know what to go for and am hoping you guys could help me out.  (P.S. 980 ti/ fury x is out of my price range)

970 vram issue is about as little of an issue as it gets. 99.9% of users will not notice.

Rebrand a third time ?

The only triple rebrand was the R7 370.

I would go for a R9 390/R9 290(x)/970/other but that depends on your budget

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

Are you gaming at 1080p? If so then you won't even notice the difference with the 970. You're just buying into the hype.

I'd go the 970 route if you're on a budget, or if you're really strapped for cash, a 290x and then get another one later on if devs decide to utilize the combining of GPU memory with DX12.

I don't think the 980 is really overpriced. It's basically a flagship card. You want the upper range, you gotta pay for it.

one rebrand is already one too many though. 3 rebrands is just straight up messed up.

To reiterate.

970 OC = 980 stock

980 OC = 980 Ti stock

980 Ti OC = Titan X

From 970 to 980 to 980 Ti, each OC'd jump nets about 20% performance increase.

The problem with the early 980 reviews were they compared an OC'd 970 to the 980. It's just like how they are comparing a water-cooled Fury X to a stock 980 Ti.

A used 980 is almost the same price as a new 970 at this point and it offers 20% more performance once OC'd so it's a good buy if you can afford 400.

IIRC 980 Ti OC is faster than Titan X stock. They are like 1fps off each other at stock.

980 TI OC'd can be faster than a Titan X at stock depending on how much you OC this is true; I was trying to be conservative.

I don't think they are off by only 1 FPS at stock tho considering the Titan X has more cores.

There are in a lot of resolutions; here are 4k benchmarks.
