So i have been asked to build someone a AMD pc (Red and black theme) the specs :

Mobo: Msi 990fxa Gaming

Cpu: Amd Fx-8370

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb (2 x 8Gb)

Cpu: cooler: Corsair H100i Gtx

Gpu: Msi R9 270X 4Gb or Msi R9 280 3Gb

Case: Nzxt H440 Red

Psu: RaidMax 1000W 80+ Gold Semi Modular

Sdd: Kingston HyperX fury 240Gb

Hdd: WD 1Tb

So this will be a nice red and black theme but i am disappointed the Msi 990fxa Gaming only has a 6 Power phase. I wanted to go for the 990fx Killer but its out of stock. So how much will this limit the oc abilities and should i go for Msi R9 270x 4Gb or Msi R9 280.

Thx

You don't need an AMD chip to do a red and black build...

he already has 1000w psu so not gonna go buy a 850W

If he doesn't already own the H100i, I'd take that off the list and get a cheaper cooler, specifically a nice air cooler from that of Noctua, Be Quiet or CryOrig (take your pick) -- then get an Intel chipset. You may even have room for a better GPU.

You can do a red and black build with an Intel chipset. I don't see why people are still buying the FX chips.

Because in some situations the amd chip is still better than the equivalent priced intel chip.

@OP, if this is a purely gaming build, then scrap the 8370 and get a i5 4440, with a cheap mobo and save yourself and your friend some cash. You can still find red/black components, and the gpu can still be AMD, the 280 will stomp the 4gb 270X just sayin.

Well if you insist on AMD for the gaming build, you can always use a Gigabyte 990FXA board. It is all black with 8+2 power phase.

Edit: actually some of the heatsinks are grey, so NVM.

The crosshair V by Asus has some white, on the clips, don't know the power phase though.

Not all power delivery is equal, could the MSI build be capable as is? Maybe check reviews.

FTFY

I and many other's have already shown that there are situations that the amd chip is still a better option. I'm not going to re-write almost hours of research and debate ora wall of text and statistics along with graphs here. If you want it, you can search the forums, or my profile mate. Nor am I willing to get into an argument on this here, as that doesn't help the OP whatsoever, and neither does being a blind fanboy consumed in this forum's amd hate man.

Whether you like it or not, there are a handful of situations it's better, and that's just it. You don't have to like facts, you just have to know them. Would i recomend it? only if you were in need of those one or two things, and had absolutely no more budget for something better than a 4440 or 4460. But if that's not the case, then don't bother with the red teams chip.

Yet you took the time to respond to me with a semi-lengthy post to explain why you think you're correct.

ill msg him quick about intel

If he's going to want the best performance without worrying about issues of minimum frame rates that come with AMD chips, then he'd want to go Intel. He can still get an AMD video card like another member already pointed out.

ok so the reason it amd/msi is because its of the rage expo so it has to be amd/msi so i don't think i can change much oh and when did i mention that this was a gaming pc?

Gaming video card / Gaming-marketed motherboard / Gaming-marketed memory / Overclocking

Probably just an assumption based on the gaming board and other products generally marketed towards gamers, but since that is for aesthetic purposes, its not relevant.
