GTX 980 vs 980 TI

RaymondL

Hey guys!

I am planning on getting a new graphics card and was originally was going to get a GTX 970

However i have decided to spend a bit more money on a beefier graphics card since im already spending alot already and im stuck with the 980 vs the 980 ti and im in the uk and the 980 ti is around £160-£180 more expensive! I was wondering if it is actually worth that much difference?

I am also waiting for the fury cards to be released to see what they bring :)

Thankyou!

Well, it depends,

if you have all that extra cash, why not, but I in my opinion GTX 980 ~= R9 390x < GTX 980 ti, I wouldn't even consider the 980 that much because of the lower price of the 390x.

The 980ti though is worht it if you have the $$

Yes the extra money is worth it if you have it.

The 980 ti is A LOT faster than the 980.

The price increase for that much performance is well worth it in my opinion. In the 9XX series, the 970 and the 980ti offer the best value and are the only ones worth buying from a value standpoint.

Um and its performance is only a little shy of 980 SLI... It's far from just a 980 with more vram. This isn't AMD we're dealing with here :P

I think it is worth the extra money for the 980 Ti... it's a much more powerful card for just a bit more... and EVGA has a liquid cooled hybrid version of it as well...

-snip-

The GTX 980 is not a good price to performance card.

The GTX 980Ti on the other hand offers performance better than the Titan X when overclocked and it's worth the extra cash.

I would recommend to wait for the Fury X benchmarks to roll out so you can see a drop in the 980Ti price.

Edit:

I was not aware of the GTX 980 price drop, it has a very good price to performance ratio now.

Actually the 980's price to performance is pretty close to the 980 ti's now since the price drop.

Doubt it, it appears 980 ti and fury x will trade blows, most likely it will stay the same price, $650.

10% slower. 10%*60 = 6fps. Yeah, I'd call that about the same -- it's going to vary between games.

And given how interchangeable the 980 and 970 are in many cases, 980 Ti is a little shy of 980 SLI.

980 SLI is like 40% faster than the 980 TI dude, you realize that right?

The 980 TI is only around 25% faster than ONE 980, and loads of games have 80-90% scaling.

I guess it depends on the version of the 980 Ti and the game.

This benchmark shows 73fps for 980 SLI at 1440p and 980 Ti at 71fps at 1440p.

Depends on the res your playing at.. If you have a 1080 60hz monitor.. stick to the 970.

If your at 144hz, 1440p or 4k, then 980ti.

If you do go 980Ti, the hybrid from EVGA isn't too much more than the other non-reference designs in the UK.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

This benchmark shows 73fps for 980 SLI at 1440p and 980 Ti at 71fps at 1440p.

That's one game that's had loads of driver problems since day one, how is that even remotely relevant lol

Quote from Pcgamer.com:

If you’re thinking SLI/CF will win by a landslide, it depends on what game and settings you’re running. On average, 970 SLI is only 5-10 percent faster than the 980 Ti, but depending on the game it may be as much as 20 percent faster...or 15 percent slower. For such a small overall gain in performance, we’d take the 980 Ti. The added VRAM will likely prove more beneficial with time, with several newer releases already using more than 4GB VRAM at maximum quality and high resolutions, and it leaves the door open to 980 Ti SLI in the future. And single card solutions are almost always better—some games simply don't offer good SLI/CrossFire support, especially with launch drivers.

http://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-review/

Keep in mind 980 SLI is way faster than 970 SLI, adding an even bigger gap inbetween them and the 980 TI.
