Semi Truck gaming PC. SFF or Laptop?

BobbyG2

Hey guys, some time early next month I'm going to be getting a gaming PC for my truck. I was just wondering, does anyone have any experience with a desktop in a vehicle?

I'm just wondering if desktop parts would be able to withstand the vibrations of being in a moving vehicle up to 11 hours a day, or if it would be better to just get a laptop. I have enough space for a micro atx node style case, and a tv mount built in that I'm pretty sure is vesa compatible for a monitor.

Either way, I'll be going all Solid State for the storage.

Also, far out there idea: If you think desktop parts will be fine, do you think AIOs would be fine too? I was thinking of getting a Fury X and maybe an AIO for the CPU. If imagine the AIO would be easier on the motherboard, but not sure if the radiator would be up to the task of standing up to the vibration.

Side note: My truck is a 2016 Kenworth T680, so the vibrations won't be as bad as an older truck. This thing rides smoother than my Buick.

Intel i7 6700k @ 4.8ghz, NZXT Kraken X61, ASUS Z170 Maximus VIII Hero, (2x8GB) Kingston DDR4 2400, 2x Sapphire Nitro Fury OC+, Thermaltake 1050W

Don't go for water cooling if you're going to be leaving it in the truck. Stick with an air cooler, one that sits flat (like the stock cooler) and not a tower one. That and SSD-only storage, you're pretty much set. A laptop would still be a more practical solution though.

Alright cool, thanks guys. :) hopefully there will be an air cooled version of the fury x, if not I'll have to go back to NVIDIA lol

I'd stay away from water-cooling as well, SSD only, and make sure any heavy video card is supported.

And that's a damn nice truck. The Kenworth I drove was a tad older.

  • 6 months later...

Alright I'm going to be ordering the parts before the end of the month, thinking this:

Cooler: TBD

Case: http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16811133275&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566

VGA: http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=14-202-186

SSD:http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16820147374&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566

Question, do you think the EVO is worth the extra $60 over something like this?

The computer is just going to be used for gaming/multimedia, nothing demanding on storage like video editing.

I'm going to be using my fx8320, ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0, 8GB G.Skill ddr3-1866, and thermaltake 850w PSU until this summer, hopefully upgrade to ZEN or Skylake-E, whichever performs better or is available at the time. I'm using a Samsung 32" 1080p tv until a monitor like the Acer Predator Ultrawide comes out, without the issues that monitor has. I'll be getting a second fury or upgrading to Greenland or pascal at that point.

I have an Noctua NHD14 (monster) but that likely isn't staying when I bring it on the truck lol. I was thinking of getting a 240 or 360mm AIO and mounting it in the bottom of the case, so that hopefully if I do get unlucky and it leaks, it won't wet anything? If still not a good idea, what cpu cooler would you guys recommend to tame that bulldozer, and maybe get at least some OCING done (it's currently at 4.2ghz and maxes out at 55c during stress tests)

I'm thinking of dropping the SSD down to a 500GB 850 Evo, and using laptop hard drives for mass storage, like this:

Also, I'm considering continuing using the Noctua D14. I'd imagine having a horizontal mounted motherboard would help a lot with support.

Grabbing a pair of these for the intake fans, and relcoating the front 200mm as a top exhaust:
