how about a 380 ?

the 380 from the videos ive seen is a rebrand of the r9 285 but has 4gb of ram, so the 280 should outperform it even though its a older card http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-380-vs-Radeon-R9-280X

how about a 380 ?

A r9 380 is like an r9 285 with a slight overclock to it and 4gbs of VRAM. It will be better also.

Maybe common games like mobas and some shotters you wont have any problems, I've saw some Whitcher 3 gameplays where the 960 handle really good 40fps ish on Ultra Settings maybe future games should run nicely at medium.

I really considered the 960 my choise but since the 970 its some bucks ahead I decided to wait and save a little more so I could afford a 970.

GTX 960 its a great choise go for it "JUST DO IT! DO IT!" Anyway a 970 would be awesome
Oh I almost forgot Strix its pretty nice looking and performs just as good as a G1

sorry bad english xD

how about a 380 ?

380, 380x, 385 are around the same in performance with the GTX 960.

If you look at benchmarks, the AMD cards trade punches with the GTX 960 in the 1080p gaming segment.

If you have a beefy power supply > 500 watts, go with the AMD.

Not too beefy, a 960 will easily run under 400 watts.

Not to mention the 960 will be ice cold compared to the triplets and you'll get superior driver support from Nvidia.

$150 difference is not "some" bucks to budget gamers.

The 970 is THE card to get at the moment.

Im a budget gamer, i had to sold a lot of 360 games and my cellphone just to get to the price, but when you get to the goal, and see those FPS, you know that those "some bucks" really worth it so you wont regret

I believe it.

However it would depend on his cpu.  If it bottlenecks the 970 and no future plans to upgrade, he'll just be wasting money.

there is no future proofing with an entry level enthusiasts cards no matter the resolution.....if you want to play 1080p in the future get a 980ti or Fury X that will last far longer into the future than a 960 for 1080p (might be overkill now but like you were saying Future Proof)

i have the 960 and i love it. it will do great at 1080p especially with a nice overclock (mine reached 1500 core 1510 will work but 1520 artifacts so i keep it at 1500), i am running on a waay higher resolution (card is temporary) i have no experience with the 280(x) so i cannot comment on that
