Hey guys, I am going to build my first NAS. It's going to be used to backup our 4 computers, stream HD content to our HTPC, and store pictures, videos, and music. I am planning on running RAID 1, and using FreeNAS. Tell me what you think.

WD Greens are bad for use in a NAS, using something like a WD Red or Seagate Barracuda.

In my understanding he should be perfectly fine with WD Greens. The Speed is normally limited by the internet connection (and even if not, a bakcup doesn't have to be as fast as it gets) and with 2 Drives there shouldn't be any problems with vibrations and stuff.

  • Secondary PC: i7-860@3,1GHz | Scythe Katana 3 | ASUS Maximus III Formula P55 | 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz | 2x Zotac GTX 280@650MHz | WD Velociraptor 500GB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB | BeQuiet! DarkPower Pro 750W | Coolermaster Cosmos S

Greens aren't made to withstand the vibrations of other drives near by.

With 2 drives in an MATX case? Dude there shouldn't be any vibration issues. You couldn't use greens in any scenario if they couldn't withstand this.

No problem man :). I thought about posting the same for a few secs until I saw the case :). By the way that's the only thing i would change. Get a M-ITX amd mobo and a smaller case. In my opinion a matx case is way to large for a 2-drive NAS.
