Top end athlon vs top end Phenom. which has better architecture?

I think the newest pentium may be 2011 or 2012. maybe even 2010

i would believe the phenom has an edge over the athlons, have little experience with the newer ones but the newer athlons is made to be cheap so it should give some indication.

Athlons haven't really changed in that time, and the top end Phenom had the benefit of an iGPU and 6 cores (which are stronger as it happens then the 3 modules in an FX 6300), so its generally the faster CPU.

I know the only time my old Phenom II x6 1075t was a monster in anything but single-core performance. So, there's that, its definitely better than the older Athlons.

Athlon(based on the APU architecture) doesn't have L3 cache I think but the IPC is supposedly better.

It looks too close to call. I couldn't find any benchmarks but it looks like the single core performance of the modern athalon is better but the best phenom is a 6 core processor.

Phenom is quite a lot faster even vs a newer Athlon.

Athlon II is just Athlon 64 with new instructution to support DDR3 and new bunch of stuff.

newer athlon is low end apu

it does have better architecture, but low performance because very low power consumption

 

I'm not sure why you bring this up though, both old enough

still have 2 computer using Athlon II, and 1 using Athlon 4050e.

If you're on about the 860K and the Phenom II, if it's the Phenom II X4 the Athlon would win due to newer instructions and similar multi-threaded performance, but I'd personally take a hex core Phenom over any FM2 chip.

If you talk about AM3 then I guess it is the Phenoms. X3, X4 & X6!

 

But if you also talk about the FM2+ Athlon II X4 860K with modern tech I would say 860K!
