K guys, the 3 games I have been playing recently are GTA 5, Skyrim and Dota 2... (various amounts of power needed for each game, right?)... and in these games, every 5 - 10 seconds, i experience a hiccup and my game freezes for .5 of a second and resumes back to the playing... At first I thought that my CPU was overheating but temps have not exceeded 60 degrees Celsius, GPU: not above 55 degrees as I have my fans put on 100%... Now, I checked my thermal compound on my cooler master 212 evo and I even reapplied it... I posted a thread on water cooling as a I plan to make a full loop, idk what the problem is I just want assistance. :( PLZ

Why do you have your fans at 100%? You shouldn't need to do that, but that's off-point.

How many programs do you have open while you're playing those games?

Probably only skype or team speak...

Have you ever played the games with the games being the only application open? Did the stuttering still occur?

No, on my old laptop I had no stuttering and I was playing Dota 2 with like 5-10 tabs open... I thought this PC would be an upgrade... and yes the stuttering did occur... I think it is the processor tbh... cuz my laptop did have an intel i7 3770M

I don't think that CPU would cause something like that. Have you monitored hardware usage/utilization?

Heyyo,

First thing's first... we need your FULL system specifications please. Easiest way if you don't know how? Go on Google and download Speccy. Do the export/save thing and then post the results on here please.

Hmm, I'd recommend installing MSI Afterburner and seeing what your GPU useage, VRAM useage, CPU useage, RAM useage, Pagefile and set them to display on screen. Post a screenshot around when it's stuttering please.

Use MSI Afterburner

For MSI Afterburner?

  • Install it WITH the RIVIA Tuner Server Monitoring
  • Go into the "Settings"
  • Go into the "Monitoring" Tab
  • Select the Options you wish to monitor with (such as GPU Usage)
  • Select "Show in OSD" for each option you want displayed
  • Go into the "On-Screen Display" Tab
  • Setup a shortcut keyboard combo (I use CTRL ' as an example)
  • Launch the game of choice and tap your keyboard combo set in MSI Afterburner
  • Enjoy!
Here's an example of my setup on MSI Afterburner:

http://i.imgur.com/kuT0brY.png

You can then go into "Rivia Tuner" and setup some options, such as how you want the text to appear (Vector 2D, Vector 3D or the beautiful Rasterizer 3D... which depending on the game might detect it as a hack potentially... so might wanna do a support ticket with the game of choice before using it.).

Next? You should definitely try running a proper virus and malware scan. For a decent free one that doesn't require installing a big program that saps your memory all the time? Trendmicro Housecall.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Do a FULL system scan. If your PC finds anything? Just do the free removal and close any full program adverts (optional I guess).

Then we'll see what to try afterwards if that doesn't fix it.

Heyyo,

Hmm, everything looks fine there... So my guess is there's something messed up with your windows operating system.

Please follow this guide and post your list of installed programs please.

try monitoring your vram usage. gta5 is a ram hog and its pretty easy to max it out. Maxing out your ram is what would cause bad stuttering.

Heyyo,

Hmm, everything looks fine in there too... by chance did you try the virus scan?

If the virus scan doesn't fix it? Sorry dude but I think your Windows install is just bugged. Back up all important information and do a fresh Windows install.

Tbh I tend to reinstall Windows once a year. I find there's some performance degradation after usually a year's time. Maybe Windows 10 will fix that? Maybe not. Then again, it could be all in my head... but I swear NTFS fragments a lot more than a Linux operating system with EXT4.

Hey, I have a question, if I were to switch to linux, how would I get the windows games onto the linux platform?

Heyyo,

Yes and no...

Yes, you can get LOTS of games via Steam under the SteamOS/Linux section found here for native game ports:

http://store.steampowered.com/browse/linux/

Yes, you can use things like PlayOnLinux, WINE or the paid premium Crossover for Linux to play many Windows games on Linux with some performance degradation.

No... as in lots of games with DirectX 11 will not function under Linux even with stuff like Crossover for Linux. A prime example is GTA V

https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/grand-theft-auto-v

So it's a toss-up on which games you play tbh. I'm hoping with the future release of Vulkan 3D API on Linux/Windows/Mac will help breathe much needed life into the Linux gaming scene as OpenGL currently sucks compared to DirectX 11. Multi-GPU for gaming as a prime example is impossible in current versions of OpenGL. OpenGL is so messed up? That even ID Software dropped it from ID Tech 5 Engine in The Evil Within. It'll be interesting to see OpenGL returns in Wolfenstein: The Old Blood or if the trend continues of DirectX 11 only. My guess is the latter.
