Half memory speed?

Go to solution Solved by SteepGnomeKing,

I think it's running at the correct speed. I assume it's showing the base number. Since it is ddr (double data rate) you always double the number.

My MSI GTX 680 PE OC is showing that its running at 3005MHz instead of the 6008MHz that me memory is supposed to be running at. I havent owned an Nvidia card since the 9600GT series so im not completely up to speed on the newer cards. Is my card running at half the speed or is it normal to show this speed? Do i need to RMA?

The memory readings were taken from the Kombustor stress test at default settings. (Kombustor is up to date as of this post)

Let me know what you guys think!

tell me if you card is reporting all of its memory, ex: if your card is a 680 2gigs then it should say so in GPU-z on the memory size section.

this reading was during the stress test?, because card nowadays down clock themselves while under low loads or idle, if your case has poor airflow and your card gets too hot it may down clock itself too, to prevent damage to itlself without shutting itself down completely.

^ This is your answer.

DDR memory manufacturers put the effective frequency with which data is read on the box. The software reports the clock frequency that the memory is running at. As SteepGnomeKing said, DDR stands for Double Data Rate, meaning that it can be accessed twice every clock cycle, thus the effective data rate is the clock frequency times two ;)

^ I'm sure that is the correct answer

For me personally:

GPU-Z shows 1902

Some other software shows 3804

Nvidia control panel shows 7608

CoolerMaster CM 690 II Basic | Intel i7-2600 | CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ 2x Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! Edition

Asus P8Z77-V LK | 2 x 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz CL9 | SeaSonic M12ii 850W 80+ Bronze Crucial M4 128GB

That makes more sense now. Nvidia control panel system information shows that the memory data rate is in fact 6008MHz which is correct. You guys have been a great help. Im going to have to RMA anyway since one of the fan blades broke not too long ago. Hopefully MSI will replace it and send me back the same card instead of someone else's referb.

Good luck with that RMA. Don't forget to mark this question solved ;)
