I am staring my first PC build and am wondering if i can buy a computer for 100 dollar with windows 7 64 bit installed take out the hard drive and put it in my new build transfer the data to a ssd and get a hdd and os for 100 dollars as well as a spare computer to run elementary os (a linux distro) on. Sometimes the OS (as is usually the case with laptops) is locked to the motherboard, which would prevent you from transferring that to the SSD. The OS in that I would think follows the same rules. Pro tip: If the windows key has OEM in it, the key is locked to the motherboard, if it isn't just go ahead and install the windows in the new computer.

Prebuilds like that usually have locked OEM copy (branded). You could reuse it, but whether that works or not, is not 100% certain. And you need to call to MS for activation of it. You can get windows key for $100 anyway, or cheaper from G2A.com. Plus HDDs in those things aren't so good either so I would rather get Win8.1 key than piece of scrap like that.
