Best GPU for password cracking

I've been researching which one is better for password cracking a CPU or a GPU and found that a GPU is. Also AMD is better than Nvidia in cracking hashes. I would assume one of the new 300 series cards would be good like the fury. But I would like some input from you guys. I don't plan on building my new system anytime soon but I like to research so I know for future reference.

The R9 390x for password cracking would be about a 5% improvement over the 290x.

I would tell you to get a Fury or 290x

Running a password cracker isn't going to really help for cyber security, unless you plan on writing the algorithms yourself. 

 

Password cracking is, obviously, a very touchy topic. You'd need to be careful having that sort of program, as well as how you use it. The law on that sort of thing is extremely vague.

 

You'd have to look into what kind of workload it will be. A lot of people seem to recommend gaming cards for everything, but don't realise that certain workloads are much better suited for workstation type GPUs. 

 

If you just plan on running a brute force type cracker, there's really not a lot of point to it. Anyone can run one, and they're horribly inefficient. If you're wanting to get into cyber security, you're better off looking at getting into detailed software creation (OS type stuff, or even very low down firmware). That, as well as advanced networking are probably the best way to get into white hat hacking (assuming that's the sort of thing you're looking at). There are some courses for it, but you need a pretty good knowledge of general stuff before you can get into looking for gaps in security.
