I am about to build a Home Server using the Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 Case.

I would like to know if it is alright to use 8 x Western Digital Red 2TB Drives in RAID 5 or RAID 6.

These drives are about the only ones within my price range.

Any assistance would be helpful.

Thank you. :)

Reds really aren't ideal for this application.

But if they're the only ones within your price range then I guess you don't have a choice.

Can you offord WD RE's?

No I can't but, I do remember Linus doing a Tech Tip on this and he used (I think it was 8) these same drives and it works fine... So, I will give it a go too.

Thank you for your advice though.

First, Use RAID 6 if you are using 8 drives.

Second, WD Reds will do fine, but you could also go even cheaper and get some Seagate Barracuda drives, they also work fine in RAID.

Red's will be fine for this. RE's would be better but Red's will OK.

Thank you both for your advise, I knew I came to the right place lol. :D

Ssoele... I am not a fan of Seagate Barracuda drives, I'll stick to a brand I trust.

Neither am I, but the price difference is quite a lot. Just don't use WD Greens, they are horrible at RAID.

I assume with your home server, it would be left turned on all the time, I would recommend the WD black, it comes with a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. It's semi-enterprise class

I would honestly go Barracudas over Reds - for the difference, the price isn't justified in my view.

Yeah - are they really all that different to Green drives?

They're also faster and cheaper.

Okay thank you all for your input but, I have decided to go with the Western Digital Red 2TB drives as, I personally have had troubles with Seagate Barracuda drives in the past and I will NEVER go back to them again.

With Western Digital drives, I have never had any problems what so ever.

Once again thank you all for your input but, my mind is made up to go with the WD's.
