Recently my friends and I have been bouncing the idea around of investing in a big MMORPG for all of us to play. Most of the time we only buy cheapo Indy games so we want to make our purchase count. The problem is that all of us are very in-experienced in the MMO genre, we were hoping for some recommendation according to the criteria below.

-Great CO-OP game play with a small group (3-4 people)

-Great class system with diverse roles

-Shallow Learning curve, this particularly pertains to the UI, we're all cool with spending some time to get good at combat.

-One time purchase, or very cheap subscription (<$20)

-Lot's of game play (Or frequent updates)

The game we're looking at now is The Elder Scrolls Online because everyone in our group loves The Elder Scrolls games, however we don't know much about it, does TESO fit our wishlist? Lastly I'd like to thank anyone who does post a recommendation in advance. Also i'm open to any wisdom about MMORPG's you can provide.

Thanks

-Bookhugger

Try FF14.  Heavensward is coming and I guess the pro/con of it is that you can't do any Heavensward content until you finish everything before it, so loads of content there.

Swtor is very nice coop for up to 4 players. I was until Christmas an extreme competitive player on that game. Unfortunately it seems to be dying off. Still if you guys don't plan on endgaming (which trust me don't. At least one of you will suck at the game and hold everyone else back. This goes for all mmorpgs) then it or any other mmorpg will be perfectly fine provided you find the universe of the game interesting.

Seriously though until endgame mmorpgs are designed to be complete jokes so don't worry about difficulty. There won't be any. Especially as a group.
