Hi everyone,

So I have had my ASUS DCU II OC 780 SLI since last year and so far they have served me well. I never faced any issues regarding anything till today, when I tried to install back my 2nd video card and constantly kept getting boot loop (only the boot screen then black and boot screen back again). Let me put everything in details -

1. I used SLI till 2 months back and then I took 2nd card out and put it in box away to save some power and honestly I wasnt really playing anything that needed SLI.

2. I purchased a Corsair h100i last week and installed in my system and had no issues so far ( with 1 card).

3. Today I decided to put back the 2nd card for SLI to play Witcher 3 in higher settings.

4. I put the 2nd card and BAAM! Constant bootloop!

5. So I checked the cards individually and each works like charm, no issues !

6. The moment I put both of them together - Bootloop ! :o

Judging by this, I feel PSU is not being able to handle the total power draw now! I have heavily used the SLI setup till 2months back and the only thing that has changed today is the added H100i !

So here is my questions -

a) what is possibly the reason behind this madness? any help guys?

b ) does anyone have any idea how much power H100i consumes?

c) any other XFX psu user have bitter experience like me?

d) do I really need to upgrade my PSU ? :(

Here is complete details of my rig -

CPU - i7 4770k, stock, no overclocking + corsair h100i

RAM - 24gb g-skill ripjaws 1600mhz ddr3 (2*4gb + 2*8gb - 4channel)

MOBO- gigabyte gaming gt

HDD - 1tb seagate hdd 7200rpm

SSD - 512gb ssd crucial mx550

Graphics Card(s)- Asus dcu ii 780 (2)

PSU - 850watts XFX psu , link - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207028&cm_re=xfx_850w-_-17-207-028-_-Product

Any help or ideas would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

UPDATE: My system doesnt boot into OS anymore. I now have the same issue even without any peripheral connected to the mobo. It just continues infinite BOOT Loop. Before each reboot the debug LED shows code 'D2' - which as per my mobo's document is 'PCH Initialization Error'... I am out of my wit!

850W should be enough for all of that, or I could be wrong

but 850 is a lot of watts m8

Exactly my thoughts. But still, I used this to calculate the total power draw -  http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

It does say maximum power draw would be 816w, still in margin. Unless my PSU is dying - i have no clue whats happening!

did you clear the CMOS when you install the 2nd GPU?

just did that, next reboot i was told that the bios has been reset and asked me to choose whethere to load default and reboot. unfortunately that didnt solve the issue, still - constant bootloop..

Ya, take the battery out for 5 mins.

my mobo has a cmos switch to clear the bios/cmos,, i held it for like over a min and next boot i was told that the bios was reset. unfortuately the issue persists... bootloop :(

try reseating the GPU

or try swapping the GPU order

make sure your power plugs are installed correctly

i am thinking the same! thats why i asked if anyone has proper idea of h100i's power consumption since that the only thing added to my system from last time i had SLI... i really am not willing to shed another 250 for a new psu right now :(

@dragoon20005 I just checked with two other gpus and they work fine (just like mine 780s) when installed single - but the moment they are put together - i have boot loop.. dayummm!!!

Your estimated wattage was over 800, and using an 850 is cutting it close.  I'd suggest getting an Azza Titan.

but i had used the same system from past year, only thing added now is the h100i... besides, during boot i dont thing the components would draw their max power so unless my psu is really in bad condition i dont think a 850w psu would have any issue handling this setup :(

at this point i would probably consider buying a new psu, any ideas ? and i think now it is either something with my mobo or my psu. i just want to be sure about what it is before buying a new psu so that i dont waste the money completely on something i didnt need to invest in :(

Azza Titan is a great PSU for crossfires and slis.  It's a seasonic style/build 1000w that can handle your build just fine.

over at newegg its out of stock.. anything else you might suggest?

Still not a good idea to cut it close on an estimate.  Estimates are assumed.  But, 900-1000w would be smarter.  You can still hit maximum, and doing so can cause a boot loop.  But, adding the h100i probably put you closer.

i see your point. at this point best thing would be to uninstall the h100i and see if then i can use the sli setup as before ---- but, it would be really really hectic to uninstall the h100i (i didnt like the installation either)... but i guess i dont have any other choice at this point.. oh damn!

http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-80PLUS-Gold-Certified-Power-Supply/dp/B00EB7UIZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434516873&sr=8-1&keywords=corsair+1000w  This is more of one I'd suggest from Corsair as it is highrated+more in the voltage range in your favor.

this is the one i think i am gonna bite ! gonna get it from newegg (shoprunner free 2day)! thanks a ton bro... but the question remains open, is it really my psu ? i guess i wont know till i get a replacement psu !

Mega BUMP! SO I purchased a new PSU (1200w to make it futureproof) and eh eh eh! The problem persists! Now I decided to look into the debug LED of my MOBO and found that system restarts right after D2 code - which as per gigabyte's manual is 'PCH Initialization error' - I have no clue what this means but I know I have to RMA my mobo at this point. Anyone has prior experience of RMA with Gigabyte? Why me!

Most likely.

Most likely it was both.  The PSU probably ended up corrupting the bios or did some volt damage from the draw.  Also, I had to RMA a mobo through Amazon.  Got a full refund, and they gave me a discount on the 990FX mobo I got.

lucky you! i got mine from newegg and i am pretty sure they doesnt handle any RMA out of 30days period. I have contacted gigabyte tech team and they are horrible! who knows when the RMA would be approved and even if it gets approved then how long they would take to replace (i hope they dont repair this) this piece of $hit.... and i thought gigabyte mobos were good. the first mobo i got was msi, i had to rma that twice and decided to purchase the gigabyte one.. well, seems like mobos are still the $hittiest part of pc!

Now I won't ever buy from newegg.  :S  And, they must have changed in the past year because they were nice to me about it.  Told me if I went through Amazon I'd get my full money back.  Plus, they gave Amazon the discount thing.  I do agree with you the last part.  It would be nice if there was a way to unbrick them without needing a new motherboard.  -.-

I will try with newegg and see what they have to say... so it is the 3rd mobo failed in 1yr 3months! not a single mobo is out there that doesnt have issues! it seems like mobos are like hit or miss, if u get a golden one then u must be lucky and it would last forever, otherwise - good luck RMAing it multiple times before loosing your mind and just buying a new one and use it till it lasts...

I feel bad for you.  2 random Mobo failures, and a 3rd caused by a PSU.  :S

First two were MSI, so I switched to Gigabyte with this 3rd one, and now this... well, it lasted at least a year and 3 months... i have already ordered the same model from newegg one last time, reason being - if i can get this rma-ed and it works then i will pay the restocking fee and send the new one back so i would probably loose like 30$ but at least i wont have to wait while the RMA is being done.. its just sad when you buy something and expect it to work and then they fail you horribly over and over again. because of the first two MSI mobo - my first build took over a month to finish properly! you can easily find a graphics card that has 100% rating, but you wont find a mobo that has over 80% rating! i just dont understand why manufacturers dont pay as much attention! Also, its really rare to see a defective CPU ! then why the fk is it so hard to manufacture a mobo that is less prone to such defect/damage! anyway, thanks a lot for the support, i bet we all know the 'feel'.... :)
