Fun in a box: Which subwoofer do you use?

There is quite a bit of discussion on LTT about headphones, and rightly so. They are personal, they promote "me" time, and no one else has to hear your shit if they don't want to.

But when it's time for actions, no one can deny that a wall rattling subwoofer is the most fun you can have. I've been ridiculously amazed by subwoofers lately. So much that I can't get enough.

I want to hear about your experiences with subs. What rattles your walls and punches your chest when the action picks up? Did you name it? Does your wife hate it? Are you even old enough to legally marry?

And remember, size matter  ;)

I honestly don't know. It's old.

I don't like having emphasized bass. However, my brother's cat lolpwned my subwoofer, so I'm just running Rokits without a sub right now. It's still OK though.

I have a carver sub from the mid eighties or so. I think it's a 14" driver. If not bigger...

Hey! New SIgnature!

Wow I'm kind of impressed more people don't care to share about their subwoofers.

Is that like 10 or 20 years old?

Man I'd love to see a picture of something from the 80's. Back then, full range speakers had a different meaning (and sizes).

Oh man how did the cat do that? Sometimes emphasizing bass can be pretty fun, especially when watching movies.

Larger/fancier 2.1 systems for computers can be pretty difficult to beat without a lot of money. They're also quite durable. I still use a 4.1 system from Cambridge SoundWorks from the late 90's in my workout room. I can hear Tony Horton calling me out no matter what!

I don't use any subwoofer atm. I have a pair Genelec 8020B's as my speakers and they have decent bass so I haven't really needed a subwoofer. If I'll eventually get one, it'll most likely be a Genelec too.

Those are some fancy looking speakers. The contours around the tweeter are quite appealing.

I actually think a 10-12 inch sealed subwoofer would mix very well with your speakers and extend down to the 20-30 Hz range.

The sticker's faded but we got them back in '02...

I also have a pair of Kenwood speakers that have built-in subwoofers... can shake the neigbor's house at full volume...

Almost 10. I remember buying it in 2007.

Genelec actually has a subwoofer, the 7050B, which is meant to be paired with the 8020B. I just don't really have room for it at the moment and of course it's a bit expensive at around 900€ so I haven't gotten one yet.

I have an XTZ 99 w8.16 for my home theater. It's getting on in age, but it still packs a great punch, so much so that the downstairs neighbour has mentioned it on occasion.

Yeah my speakers can't. They are stupidly small (tinny bit bigger than large potatoes)

So I need a sub to do that.

Still, my sub is relatively small, 8"

100w/50w

This is a much more sensible looking bass machine.

Even big speakers need companionship from a sub. You know what they say... jack of all trades, master of none. I have floorstanding speaker that extend down to 35 Hz and I still decided a subwoofer was necessary...

And then I decided I needed a bigger one... and I think my wife might leave me when it arrives. One might think I am compensating for something, but I'm just a bass head as it turns out.

It is, though my favorite Genelec sub is the 7073A with its four 12 inch woofers :). Sadly, at around 7500€ it's way, way out of my price range.

Genelec is like subwoofer porn. They have some really nice designs... but the 7073A is only 1000w? Seems rather uneventful for four 12" soup bowls plus driving six other channels.

That's plenty though... Throwing lots of power at the subs isn't great from a commercial standpoint. Since SPL adds up logarithmically you get diminishing returns anyway, but even more when power compression (plus the added bonus of parameter shift) comes into play. Also product returns will increase due to roasted voice coils.

I'm not sure I understand why it has 6 other channel inputs and outputs. Does it have to amplify those signals as well?
