Is this PSU any good?

79wjd

I have this psu lying around from my old 10~ year old computer and I'm wondering if it's still good to use for my NAS (with probably 3-4 drives for now, eventually up to 6-8 drives). (The NAS is running a Haswell Pentium at stock speeds)

Please don't recommend me a new psu, I just need to know whether or not this psu is good or if it's just going to cause me trouble.

The one in the Johnny Guru link (unless you found a different one) is from 2012 and has a black PSU in the picture -- the one in my system is from 2005~ and is silver (i.e. he reviewed a later revision).

You're right. I was oblivious to that. Well, the reviews on Newegg were extremely positive and it's not a Diablotek, Logisys, etc, so you should be okay. I would just be wary of it being 10 years old.

Looking online it doesn't say much on it but from the OEM lists I can find it's made by Hi-pro which is on par with someone like Delta which make OEM PSU's for Dell, HP and the like. The PSU shouldn't be garbage but decent quality from the OEM brand.

Yeah, well, I don't put a lot of faith in general users reviews -- plus the reviews being from 10 years ago invalidates them anyway since expectations have changed quite a lot.

Ya....so I'm not really sure... It would probably be a smart idea to replace it, although for the immediate future it's probably not bad either.

This. Use it for the immediate future. If it was your PSU to begin with, you know how personally how much it has been used, not like a used PSU that you picked up from a garage sale.

It would be best to replace it but with a name like Hipro or Delta it's a bit more comforting most of their PSU's are decent quality in terms of components and power delivery but some of their lesser units can't deliver fall short of their full power ratings.

It was my old psu, and it was probably running more or less all day long for 5 years with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 220gb HDD, and Radeon X1950 Pro.

Well, in a NAS environment where the power draw will never really go above 100-150w (generously), falling short on max output isn't an issue (not itself anyway....although it can mean it has low quality components, which would be an issue).

That tomshardware OEM list is old

10 years is an awful long time, even if it hasn't been used, I would recommend changing it.

You had 228W on the 12V rails, now it will have lost some good power. I would certainly change it.

Even with brilliant engineering it would be marginal because of its age. I doubt it was brilliantly engineered. I would be using something much more modern. Even something as simple as an Antec Earthwatts 380W psu is far better than that.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!
