MSI GTX 970 SLI

Go to solution Solved by Tim Drake,

I went with an 850w to be safe, but I think a 750w will do fine.

You went 500w overboard to be safe? k

SNIP

You can literally run two 970s on a 500w..

Yes you're perfectly fine.

Hi.

If I want to have SLI GTX 970 in the future in my rig, I take it the Cooler Master VSM 650w will not be enough. If I went for a 750w PSU, would that be enough to to run the two cards? What PSU should I choose if I want SLI? These are the current specs of the PC, anything else I would need to change if I want SLI?

650W is fine for SLI 970.

Prefect guys. Thanks a lot. Should there be uni ugh room for everything? Like when I put two GTX 970 into the machine, it's not going to be pressing against the case is it? Also with my NH D15 Cooler, will there be enough room for the cards even with the bulky cooler?

I'm pretty sure the R5 has enough clearance, even for those heatpipes.

Ridiculous amount of room don't worry

Uni ugh room?

I'll take a look at your case and Google around a bit for you

EDIT: R5 should be fine with that all.

It was people on this very forum that suggested a 750-850w power supply for a 4690k and 2 gtx 970s all overclocked, you're saying I can do that on a 350w based on your math?

One person went with a 850w PSU but that in my mind is extreme overkill. Having 2 OC GTX 970 (What brand are they BTW?) plus the 4690k will probably go up to 450w, maybe not even that. Go with a 650w to be safe.

You're fine as far as voltage goes, but you only have 2 6+2 pin pcie power connectors. You'll need a molex (4 pin connector) to pcie adapter for the second card.

I'm not trying to come off as confrontational btw, I'm perfectly okay with having an overkill power supply, but that range was suggested to me for the hardware I have several times.

FWIW,

I have a 4790k overclocked with 2x970s SLI (G1 Gaming) also both overclocked. Under full load, I pull around the 500w mark from the wall (Kilowatt meter) . Varies by application but never seen it over 550w. I have a Corsair 860i and given the load percentage my PSU runs at about 92% efficiency.
