Alright, so i was planning on getting windows 8.1 for my first PC build.  I was hyped up and was some last checks before getting the pc (im getting it next week http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/HgmyrH).  But as i was looking up each part, one major piece i missed was the operating system.  I went on youtube and saw a hideous touch screen looking start menu for windows 8.1 and honestly, that sucks.  Now after looking into it, there seems to be a piece of software you can download that fixes that, but personally, im not wanting to download much on this new computer considering i did on this old one and almost destroyed it a few times.  Now, the only "Pros" i see to windows 8.1 is being able to handle over 16gb ram (but 16gb ram is all im using for now).  My big question is, would it be worth it to just get windows 7 (home premium 64-bit)  and wait for windows 10?

If W7 is cheaper than W8.1, I would go with 7 and upgrade to 10 later. But 8.1 really isnt all that bad, and you still have a full app list in the start menu. Besides, your most frequently used apps can just live on your desktop/taskbar, so you would rarely have to use the start menu anyway.

W10 is coming out next month, buy whatever is cheaper and then do the free upgrade.

Three things.  1. i thought it was coming out in October...  2. When is it coming out next month?  3. will i be able to get a copy of it (just like i can with windows 8.) when it releases?

Microsoft says its coming July 29 I believe. And yes, both 7 and 8 can upgrade to 10 for free within a year of its release.

Personally - I can't advise Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10. I've used all for at least a month each or even more and they just do not work in the same way for a lot of sometimes simple and sometimes not so simple tasks. More often than not, they just don't do said tasks at all - that I've found.

I'm actually using Windows 10 at this very moment - and I've installed ClassicShell because the "old-style" start menu is still too "Metro UI" for me.

That being said - apparently 8 and 10 are more optimised and less bloated. Just that I don't care because 7 is so much better in every other way for me.

I think that's enough rambling on about Windows for now... Haha!
