Looking for a 10gig switch

I am looking for a 10gig sfp switch with as little ports as possible, max 8. It needs to be from a decent brand Cisco/Netgear is possible but I am open to suggestions.

Netgear XS712T is highly recommended at best price I believe. Still not cheap though.

For Cisco you can go with the Catalyst 4500X series. There are probably other solutions but this one I know for sure. Be ready to pay the premium. As for Netgear, I know only about M7300-24XF. Huawei is IMO an OK brand, there is one model but again it's 24-port S6700-24-EI.

As you can see all of those switches are aggregation switches, because only they need this type of connectivity. Generally you will have a hard time finding a <16-port SFP+/XFP switch. Unless you go with a gigabit switch with 10G uplinks.

Just a switch? Layer 2 or layer 3? Will 4 SFP+ ports suffice or do you need more? What about 10Gbe Base-T? Your title says your in the UK, what's your budget?

When I made this post I remembered 10Gbase-t. I'll probaby stick with XS708E-100NES and a 10gig pci-e card. The budget is 1500 pounds. I'd like the switch to be minimum 4x SFP since the server has got 2x 10gb sfps.

 

Looking for two switches. Budget can be flexible.

I'd look at the Cisco Small Business 500X series, which will be your best bang for your buck. Just be ready to learn Cisco CLI (if you don't already), DHCP, basic IP'ing etc.

Did that at University... Forgot it already I know the basics but nothing advanced. We already have a cisco switch and manage it via the web gui

They are not cheap though. Probably looking at around $2500 USD plus whatever the SFP's cost you.

 

One of the few Cisco SMB products that are actually worth anything ( I used to do support for them so I have extensive knowledge/experience on their whole product line )

Thanks for the answers guys- just realised I got 4x 10gbase-T ports. Gonna use those for 10 gig along with what @Eniqmatic suggested.
