Please explain how hacking can have a positive intent.

Who was that guy who showed that you could hack a insulin pump and make it kill someone, but just used pumps that were not in people, to make manufactures aware and increase the security of them.

They aren't actually hacking they are collaborating on software and the event is called hackathon. None of them are actually "hackers".

Hacking doesn't mean you're trying to steal someone's information, or get in to something, or whatever else you imagine. In fact, its original definition is "code hack." A piece of code that isn't really tested, but works.

Yo what we're trying to get you to understand is that the term "hacking" or "hacker" are not malicious. The media has twisted them to have a negative connotation. This may be an issue of jargon, where we are saying something which we know means a specific thing whereas you hear something totally different. Regardless, educate yourself, you clearly need it.

Hacking into a website, computer, or various accounts is illegal. This is what most hackers do, aka black hat hackers. Technically speaking white hat hackers are programmers and web developers. Hacking is a malicious term you mong. The media hasn't twisted anything, so you can take your tin foil hat else where, thanks.

The act of hacking the insulin pump was negative. The outcome of the manufacturers designing them against hacking was positive. Get of the forum pls.

No because the guy who did it never hurt a fly but pervented some deranged assholes from killing innocent people, that is hacking for good.

Also way to be a ass for literally telling someone to go fuck themselves and stop doing something they really enjoy.

What he did with the information after is irrelevant to the fact that hacking is still negative. In trying to justify hacking you're grasping at straws, I don't think OP wanted to learn how to hack insulin pumps to help people.

Sometimes you have to hack shit for good so others can't hack it for evil.

Sounds really cliche but it is true.

So much BS in this thread. You have white hat, black hat and grey hat hackers. The last two don't necessarily do it for moral correct reasons, however white hat hackers do. There is nothing illegal about it as long as you are simply practicing on your own things. Whatever you do after that is your own business entirely. There are a few good guides from Eli the Computer Guy on YouTube. He is fairly knowledgeable about this sort of thing. Dont let others put you off dude, hacking can be a great way to learn about computers, as long as you don't become a script kiddie.

thank you very much this is the kind of reply i was looking for i love the internet and computers and just wanted to find a good source to learn and stay away from all the bs that comes with the internet

If you can't even figure out where to go to learn how to hack on your own, you're not going to be able to learn to hack. It's really that simple.

thats what im trying to learn first where to learn theres so much bs its hard for people like me to know whats real and whats not

Nope we need hackers that are good because if we left hackers that are bad to do as they please shit would get fucked up real fast.

Okay that's like saying we need criminals that are good because if we left criminals that are bad to do as they please shit would get fucked up real fast. The solution to stopping the "bad" hackers is to prevent hacking in the first place.

It's not as easy as you think it is, and you can only stop them after they fuck shit up.

How is this relevant?? End it now

Companies hire people to hack their systems to find out what vulnerabilities it has so that they can go fix them before some jackass comes and royally screws things over. That's what white hat hackers are, that's how hacking can be positive.

Hacking does not educate anyone. That's like saying you exercise your fingers through gaming. It's bs.

Okay that's like saying we need criminals that are good because if we left criminals that are bad to do as they please shit would get fucked up real fast. The solution to stopping the "bad" hackers is to prevent hacking in the first place.

Please check your medication. Thats so out there...

I'm with @ here. You people need to learn basics before commenting like shitbags. Hacking or to "hack" isn't illegal or negative just by that. In 80s and early 90s it meant people who fooled around with computers, coding etc. Currently it refers to people who do DIY stuff or make machines do something completely different from original idea.

The term has taken negative turn because of media and PC gamers. Hacker in PC gaming means someone who uses 3rd party software for personal gain. Or has changed the game code itself for same reason. The actually bad person would be Cracker. Someone who breaks security, DRM or intentionally tries to harm others.

As for OP, don't take half of comments in this thread seriously. People tend to warm up needlesly when pirate-related stuff comes up. Or something that sounds like it. But one thing is correct, learning to hack isn't same as learning PC stuff. On hardware side it teaches you electronics. On software side its basicly coding/programming. If you are into latter more, I suggest checking out demoscene. Thats people who code short software to demonstrate their skill with given perimeters. The hardware side I'm not so into or know that much. You might ask around locally for hackclubs or workshops, maybe people doing stuff with quadcopters. Or search around for forums about making stuff, Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
