grammar help

I came by some really confusing paragraph, not sure if it's my bad grammar but won't hurt to ask

 

"In the Poonch region, there was a large number of ex-servicemen who had served in the British Indian Army and World War 2. Most of these ex-servicemen were of Sudhan origin and had a long-standing dissident relations with the Dogra regime. On April 21, 1947, Hari Singh was invited to Rawalakot, where a large number of ex-servicemen turned up and paraded with their weapons."

 

The way i understand it from the paragraph

 

the sudhan natives hated the dogra dynasty, when Hari Singh (the last of Dogra dynasty) arrived to their district they celebrated his arrival.

 

historically it makes no sense. Can someone simplify this sentence for me? Thanks for the help!

i think they didn't celebrate, but paraded with their weapons as in a protest.

otherwise it just wouldn't make sense!

If they were parading with weapons they might have been putting on a show of force and trying to scare him?
