I bet I could learn some things looking at WWII closely. I've been looking at some US foreign policy debates about America being the good guys, but we've bombed civilians because we hated the Germans so much. Steven Pinker wrote The Better Angels of Our Nature, about now looking in a broad sense, crime and violence is actually at an all time low (although I heard Noam Chompsky disagrees).
